I work in an extremely vain industry

It's an industry that I love and it's one that I would still die to be in, but it is so vain. And since I've gone about 5 years without even thinking this way, it's a real hard pill to swallow sometimes ( Read more... )

That's harsh. Would it be that distracting from the performance if one of the dancers weren't gorgeous? I mean, we're not talking about "prosthetic limb" level of distraction. And even if we were, there's a guy in a wheelchair in Glee! If they can still perform successfully, so can a dance troupe.

Just my opinion, of course.

It's not like you can Take On The Establishment, I know, but if I were you, I would probably voice some dissent about the body-image obsession from time to time. Sure, people want to see pretties flit about a stage, but people also enjoy watching a diverse group of talented dancers perform as well.

It's not as easy when these people have been in the industry for decades and at my job, especially, we're dealing with clients who have PAID for a certain look so we have to provide it. Meh, it is what is. That's the way it is and will always be. For Yow, he's all about having diversity and he has never spoke to me about my weight or anything like that. But I have heard him make side comments about others and how during the Fringe he received comments about how people were offended by the way certain members of the company were costumed. And also, someone said something about someone (not sure who) when we were in New York last year. It's just always going to be present in my life, I think.

I just googled it! That looks like a great place to work! You know...besides the masochistic part.

It is! I love my job. We do a lot for the parks too. Like we manage all the acrobats for the Block Party parade at Hollywood Studios, we produce Rising Star at City Walk, do costuming for Disney cruise lines. It's really interesting but, yeah, it can be very vain. Everything around here is at some point, as I'm sure you know too.

I don't really have anything supportive to say. It's rough. :-/ I know that I find myself having bitter thoughts about the genetics I was dealt and the laziness I allow, and I'm not even in an industry where it matters. So yeah...sucks. <3
