I took a 3 day Unix/Linux Fundamentals class this week. I didn't get very lost and actually used some of what I learned to make sense of something today, so I'm pleased. Actually, I could probably get really into computer languages if I let myself - trying to make them do what you want is like a puzzle, and my OCD totally kicks in. But, that's not ( Read more... )

Yes, apparently everyone knows but me. I think what Kimora said was "security."

it's all about low standards. if you're down with doing data entry at $10/hour for 3 months until your real 9also low) slary kicks in, you too can have job!

The dog was on a rather heavy chain, which is of course the wrong thing to put on a dog, but it didn't matter because he let the dog come over and let out all the chain. He said "she pulled me, I couldn't control her" I said "then you shouldn't walk her." Mind, my dog weighs 102lbs, but she's trained and on a harness. He said "you shouldn't say that" - I said "if you let the dog bite someone, the town will kill her, it's unfair to her." People annoy me, you know? If the dog doesn't like other dogs, then either keep it inside, or walk it on a harness and muzzle it. My last dog was attacked twice, and it's pretty traumatic to not be able to protect a member of your family. Not to mention that if she gets attacked, then my 102lb dog might become afraid of/aggressive towards dogs herself. People ask us all the time if Umbra is mean. "Are those dogs mean?" Yes, they're mean, that's why my 11 month old is leaning on her. But, you know, I worry that someone will sic a dog on her to see if she'll fight because she's big and scary ( ... )

Oh my god...seriously, those are some crazy neighbors.

I have some, too, but luckily we're moving soon. A few houses down there is this old couple who lets what I can only figure out to be bands of white trash gypsy types come and go from their home, with their bundles of junk and kids running all over the place. Needless to say on July 4, they probably had enough explosives to blow up the house. I stayed out of our shared alleyway.

Well I'm NOT moving because I own the house, but it's a strong vote in favor of living in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, sometimes I think I'd rather take my chances with the bears.

Lesson 1 of *nix:
"rm -rf *" is BAD!

Lesson 2:
If you wanna give the teacher a heart attack, put ":(){ :|:& };:" on the command line and ask him "What does this do?" before hitting enter.

I learned basic Cshell scripting for my job and it is definitely great for people with OCD about typos. The nice thing is that a lot of programming languages share syntax so one you learn one you can apply basic principles to others (i.e. my PHP experience helped with Cshell).
