Alligators

I've lived in Florida for 30 years. My home is located on a canal that has alligators in it. We raised two children in this house, with the canal just twenty feet from their bedroom windows. I raised them to be aware of the alligators and told them exactly why. They may have had gator nightmares but I figured therapy as an adult was cheaper ( Read more... )

YES! I mean I live here in CA and we have water. If I saw "no swimming" on a beach area, I would not think wading in a shallow area would be a problem, and I can read signs. Alligators are not on my radar because we don't have them. When my friend moved to Florida from here, and she posted pictures of gators walking outside of her dorm, I was like, "YOU NEED TO COME HOME NOW!" My heart is broken for the family.

What happened to little Lane Graves is sad and horrifying. His parents are probably going to have what ifs and if onlys running through their minds for a long time to come. In the pictures, he resembled my grandson when he was a toddler. I cried. :(

I read about that poor family. It'd have never occurred to me that 'no swimming' means 'do not go into the water'. What a terrible, terrible thing for that poor family to go through.

Jonathan (my son) and Monica (his wife) just celebrated their 1st anniversary and they stayed at the Grand Floridian. They said that they had roped off the beach.

I remember this. And when I read the news article, I made my husband read it, because when we were at Disney in June 2010, there was a little (tiny) sand beach at our resort. It had a no swimming sign. Yet, one afternoon, I found M there with C, who was 3, playing in the tiny strip of sand, and running along in the shallow water ( ... )
