HAPPY 2010 EVERYONE!!

this is also my 201th post. HM. :D

while i'm procrastinating my mad rush of college apps (all the essays include why i want to go their particular school fffff i just want to get into college xD) to bring in the new year, here was something i wrote for my friend as a late hanukkah present, lol, hence the lack of imagination of "eight":

(eight)

-

at the seventh wonder of the world, they were mere strangers again. gazing at tall towering structures through diffracted tourist camera lenses, she had dropped her passport in her rhapsody. she bent down to pick it up, but he beat her to it, swiping it off the ground and placing it in her hand with one solid motion. when she looked up to thank him, he had already wandered away, eyes at distant stars, out of reach.

-

at the second wonder of the world, they had already established that they were connoisseurs of the ancient and exotic. they sat down at the parisian-style sidewalk cafe (but so obviously not parisian), nervous, a bit infantile in body language. je ne parle pas français. in clumsy tongue they spoke in whispers, as buttered croissants wafted in and out, as if even pastries were not privy to their utmost secrets.

“but what about your parents?”

“it’s okay.”

“where are we going next?”

“…somewhere.”

“i don’t think i love you anymore.”

she paused, stirring a cube of sugar into her tea. “i know.”

-

the farther they traveled, the further they sank into the universe. at the third wonder of the world, they got into a fight about - who really knows anymore - and she had boarded a taxi in a huff, he had merely walked off, and as the scent of backseat leather enveloped her angry tears, she wondered, is it really worth it anymore?

when dinner came around, she called him bashfully on a streetside payphone.

“can you come pick me up?”

she could hear his breath hit the receiver on the other side. “sure. where are you?”

-

at the fourth wonder of the world, it had started to rain heavily, and he held his jacket over her head, chivalrous.

she smiled. “do you remember? it was raining when we first met.”

he didn’t say anything, but kept looking ahead.

-

at the fifth wonder of the world, it had somehow ended up in cold silence.

she couldn’t even bear a touch to the skin or a look in the eyes anymore.

-

at the sixth wonder of the world, she asked him, “what have we come to?”

-

at the seventh, he said, “i don’t know,” and just kept gazing at the stars, like it was the right thing to do.

-

when they arrived at the first wonder of the world, they had set down the rules - they had to try, they just had to, for the sake of the stability and sanity of everything around them, so the carefully constructed lifestyles wouldn’t collapse underneath them. it’s for the family, no, it’s for the parents, no, it’s for us, but even on the ride from the airport to hotel, they had to each clutch onto a fading hope, because hope was a four letter word that spoke of more than just the combined effort of ourselves, much like love.

at the eighth wonder of the world, he held her hand. “i’m sorry.”
