In my head, Spock was completely expressionless. If Kirk were to ask him about it later to tease him, I imagine Spock would get REALLY defensive and try to reply with something along the lines of;

"You will find that the instinct to provide for the young is universal, born from a desire to ensure the continuation of one's species."

"She was human, Spock."
