If you’re reading this, then one of two things has happened to have you arrive at this point. We’ve known each other for 15, and in some cases, 20+, years or we’ve met recently, either IRL or over the InterTubes, through this or *another* online social network. No matter the wheres or whens behind meeting me, you may be asking yourself, “Who is this strange person I’ve have decided to allow into my (electronic) life?”
Well, physically, I’m a 35 year-old, curvy woman who has finally accepted the fact that curly hair is a good thing. I also decided, about 7 years ago, to start growing it, much to my hairdresser’s delight. I’ve worn glasses since early high school and decided, after about 6 months of failed attempts, that contacts just aren’t for me. Besides, there are so many great styles these days for glasses that my inner fashionista can be very satisfied for many years to come. I also had braces in high school, so that made for some interesting furrows in the psyche. My heritage is primarily Celtic, with a dash of Huguenot French, so I keep getting asked what foundation I'm using on my skin. Um, I'm not. :-) Pretty, smooth skin. Oh, also, if I'm wearing purple, my eyes are green. If I'm wearing brown, orange or blue, I have blue eyes, and if I'm wearing any other colour, they're grey.
Career-wise, when I was trying to decide, my plans waffled between becoming an 18-wheel truck driver (at the tender age of 8) to a travel agent (now), with an end run around lawyer (at 14) and small business owner (at 22). It came to my attention, finally, that working in a call center, as a travel agent, was going to be the best use of my abilities and talents. So, here I am, working for a great company in the travel industry, where I have been for 2 years. They must like me, because they keep giving me promotions. If a supervisor goes on maternity leave in the next few months (one’s already pregnant but someone’s been tagged for her post), I’m going to apply for the job. Management knows that I want it, so we’ll see what happens.
What do I do in my spare time? Hmmm. the Internet is a wonderful place to lose track of time. I’m a huge fan of fan fiction, and I have at least four regular fandoms: West Wing (which is where my interest in fan fic started and which will always be my go-to for TV and fiction), Gilmore Girls, Bones, and the latest, Supernatural. I’ve fallen headfirst and with my eyes wide open into that fandom, and am enjoying every minute of it. Cats on the Internet are a great way to waste a lot of time. They’re also pretty funny. Other than that, my spare time, at this point, is being consumed, to an almost unhealthy level, by the sale of a duplex. Information on that can be found in a previous
post. At this point, I am in a state of limbo, as I am waiting, somewhat impatiently, for the contractor to get on with it (a coat of paint and a piece of mdf and you’re done, buddy). Once that happens, I’ll be buying my own condo, upgrading electronics and moving in. The only person for whom I’ll be responsible will be me, myself and I and, of course, my two cats, Borris and Sasha. They are my life and, at times, my saviours.
Friends and chosen family have such an important place in my heart and my life that they will get their own paragraph or two. I share everything with two very important people in my life,
phoenix_reborn and
kittyfinn . These women, more than my cats, more than my mother (especially *with* my mother), more than anyone else, have been my safety net, my saving grace, my partners in crime, the women with whom I play cards, watch movies and TV, read books, cook (Gods do we cook), smoke too much, drink far too much (coffee or otherwise), eat too much, laugh loudly and at great length, cry, yell and run around my beautiful city, pointing and exclaiming. One I have known for over 15 years (but it seems that I’m to ignore that in favour of ownership of Supernatural DVDs) and one I’ve only known for 4 years but that feels like 15. I introduced these two wonderful women to each other about 3 years ago and we’ve all been each other’s supports and sounding boards since then. I have another, larger, circle of friends with whom food and booze is yet again the theme. We get together once every 5 or 6 weeks and explore different gastronomic delights in my home city. Again, we drink too much, laugh loudly and at great length and eat a lot of really great food. We also support and strengthen each other in between our “meetings” but in smaller groups. House parties are a common theme, and, once I do buy that condo, we should, for the most part, all be living in the same neighbourhood. I have co-workers I count in that circle, but even then, they are in a separate circle. We share crazy work stories, books and office gossip. Sometimes, it’s easier to share work stuff with the second group and life stuff with the other circle, because explaining work to my chosen family isn’t allowed and explaining my chosen family to my co-workers isn’t easy. Did that last bit make any grammatical sense? I hope it did.
Let’s see. What other salient details are missing that can be described in this last paragraph I’ve allowed myself? I’m a smoker and have been for over half my life (I’ve quit quitting so save your breath on the lectures :-))). I’m probably better off single but that opinion is in flux (my sexuality and how I approach relationships is something that I have been questioning and exploring recently and I’ll probably be blobging about that soon enough). I cross-stitch but not regularly and I’m not an expert by any means and - crap, that reminds me. I still owe my brother a project from his 30th birthday 18 months ago. Oops. I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and will never leave for any reason other than vacation (I’ve tried, for 6 weeks, and, when the plane came into view of the city, I was crying so hard that the stewardess asked me if I needed help…). Books are very important to me and my go-to books are Jane Eyre (by Charlotte Bronte) and The Lions of Al-Rassan (by Guy Gavriel Kay). I know. Ecclectic, eh? As witnessed by the end of the above paragraph, I do tend to make an end-run around grammar when the words in my mind make sense to me. If anything doesn’t make sense, please let me know…
I have now officially run out of things to say.
