Chevalier is a historical anime with actual historical figures, so this is a reference list for me to keep track of who is who and what they did, etc.


·Bestuzhev
o Chevalier: The grand chancellor of Russia, he encourages the assassination of the Empress to gain the throne through the immature heir Peter.
o In History: Count Aleksei Petrovich Bestuzhev-Ryumin (Алексе́й Петро́вич Бесту́жев-Рю́мин), Grand Chancellor of Russia, who was chiefly responsible for the Russian foreign policy during the reign of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. ·Comte de Saint-Germain
o Chevalier: A powerful Poet who works for the Duc de Orléans and was the one to teach both Lia and Robespierre to wield the power of the Psalms.
o In History: The Count of St. Germain has been variously described as a courtier, adventurer, charlatan, inventor, alchemist, pianist, violinist and amateur composer, but is best known as a recurring figure in the stories of several strands of occultism -- particularly those connected to Theosophy, where he is referred to as the Master Rakoczi or the Master R. Some sources write that his name is not familial, but was invented by him as a French version of the Latin Sanctus Germanus, meaning "Holy Brother" [Wikipedia]

·Count Cagliostro
o Chevalier: Part-time peddler, part-time alchemist working under Comte de Saint-Germain. His real name is Giuseppe Balsamo. A rather aloof and debaucherous man, Cagliostro has acquired a taste for fine liquor wherever he goes.
o In History: His original name was Giuseppe Balsamo, but he became known as a charlatan, magician, and adventurer who enjoyed enormous success in Parisian high society in the years preceding the French Revolution. [Wikipedia]

·Dashwood
o Chevalier: The leader of the Poets and the leader at the abbot of Medmenham Abbey. He is also the founder of the Hellfire Club.
o In History: Francis Dashwood, 15th Baron le Despencer was an English rake and politician, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and founder of The Hellfire Club. Dashwood founded the Hellfire Club. For his activities in the Hellfire Club, he was in his day widely regarded as being involved in devil worship. [Wikipedia]

·Dauphin Auguste/Lousi XVI
o Chevalier: The young Louis XVI, the grandson of King Louis XV. He is under Anna’s care and loves her dearly, and will become the king of France after his grandfather’s death.
o In History: Louis XVI, born Louis-Auguste, ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1774 until 1791, and then as King of the French from 1791 to 1792. Suspended and arrested during the Insurrection of 10 August 1792, he was tried by the National Convention, found guilty of treason, and executed on 21 January 1793. His execution signaled the end of absolute monarchy in France and would eventually bring about the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. [Wikipedia]

· D’Eon de Beaumont
o Chevalier: D'Eon is a member of the Secret Police, working in the shadows to keep the peace within French society. When his sister suddenly turns up floating down a river in a coffin with 'Psalms' written on it, D'Eon is thrown into a deadly struggle with revolutionaries and supernatural forces in order to uncover the truth behind his sister's death.
o In History: Diplomat, writer, spy, and Freemason, a member of the elite Dragoons and one of the best swordsmen France, whose true gender was a source of speculation and provoked public bets in the late 18th century. Generally it was believed that d'Eon was born female, but he had started to dress as a man in his childhood, and changed back from "a bad boy into a good girl" when his secret was revealed decades later. · Duc d'Broglie
o Chevalier: King Louis XV's constant companion and head of the Le Secret du Roi, the King's secret service.
o In History: Charles-François de Broglie, marquis de Ruffec was a French soldier and diplomat from a highly distinguished French military family. He served for some years in the army, and afterwards became one of the foremost diplomats in the service of Louis XV. He is chiefly remembered in connection with the secret du Roi, the private-as distinct from the official-diplomatic service of Louis XV, of which he was the ablest and most important member. ·Duc d'Orléans
o Chevalier: Duke of Orleans and brother of Louis XIV, making him Louis XV's uncle. He is closely associated with the Revolutionary Order, for they wish to make him the ‘Last King’.
o In History: Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Philippe Charles, called Duke of Chartres, and then Duke of Orléans (1701-1723) was Regent of France from 1715 to 1723. His regency during the minority of Louis XV being the last regency in the kingdom of France. On the death of Louis XIV, the late king's five-year-old great-grandson was crowned king Louis XV of France. The duke of Orléans went to the parliament, had the will annulled, and himself invested with absolute power, and the then forty-one-year-old Philippe became Regent. [Wikipedia]

·Durand (fictional)
o Chevalier: A dashing young man whose fencing prowess may rival even that of Teillagory's. Durand is highly adept in the Florentine style, wielding a rapier and main-gauche at the same time. He treasures his antique pocket watch despite the fact that it does not work properly. Durand's loyalty seems ambiguous throughout the story, but he appears to have once had affections for Lia. He eventually develops a fondness for Robin, taking the boy under his wing and even bestowing upon him his treasured pocket watch.

·Ekaterina
o Chevalier: Wife of Pyotr III, and friend of Empress Elizaveta. After the Empress’s death, Ekaterina takes the throne as Empress.
o In History: Empress of Russia, she's known in history as Catherine the Great -- modeled after Peter the Great -- though she eschewed the title in her lifetime. During her reign, Catherine the Great expanded Russia's borders to the Black Sea and into central Europe. She promoted westernization and modernization though within the context of her autocratic control over Russia and increasing the control of landed gentry over serfs. Catherine the Great promoted education and the Enlightenment among the elite. She kept up a correspondence with many figures of the Enlightenment in Europe [Wikipedia]

·Empress Elizaveta
o Chevalier: Empress of Russia, and a close friend of Lia's. She was killed by Ropebespierre so that her blood could be used to reveal the words of the Psalm of the King.
o In History: Yelizaveta Petrovna (Russian: Елизаве́та (Елисаве́т) Петро́вна), also known as Yelisavet and Elizabeth, was an Empress of Russia who took the country into the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Her domestic policies allowed the nobles to gain dominance in local government while shortening their terms of service to the state. She encouraged Lomonosov’s establishment of the University of Moscow and Shuvalov's foundation of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. She also spent exorbitant sums of money on the grandiose baroque projects of her favourite architect. The Winter Palace and the Smolny Cathedral remain the chief monuments of her reign in St Petersburg. Generally, she was one of the best loved Russian monarchs, because she did not allow Germans in the government and not one person was executed during her reign. [Wikipedia]

·King George III
o Chevalier: The King of England and husband of Queen Mary.
o In History: George III (George William Frederick) was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 25 October 1760 until 1 January 1801, and thereafter of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death. George III's long reign was marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdom and much of the rest of Europe. Early in his reign, Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, becoming the dominant European power in North America and India. Later in his reign George III suffered from recurrent and, eventually, permanent mental illness. This baffled medical science at the time, although it is now generally thought that he suffered from the blood disease porphyria. [Wikipedia]

·Lia de Beaumont (fictional)
o Chevalier: D'Eon's sister, and a skilled fencer. She was killed under mysterious circumstances. She is seeking revenge for unknown reasons.

·Lorenza
o Chevalier: Lorenza, a Poet and Cagliostro's alluring partner, though he seems far more interested in wine than in her. Despite her demure appearance, Lorenza is not above being ruthless in using the power of the Psalms to bind or kill anyone who stands in her way.
oIn History: A young woman of extraordinary beauty and grace and, like Balsamo, boundless ambition. Moving beyond Naples, they decided to work as a team of con-artists amongst the gullible and thrill-seeking Continental aristocracy. Alchemy, magic and mysticism were their stock and trade. In 1771 they became purveyors of "immortal youth" and Lorenza's amorous charms. His young wife was purported to be a woman of sixty, and yet with the help of their miracle elixir she allegedly retained her youth, grace and sexual vigor.

·Louis XV
o Chevalier: King of France, husband of Queen Marie, and mysterious manipulator, Louis is an enigma whose true intentions lay unclear until the end of the series.
o In History: Louis XV ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1715 until his death. Unexpectedly surviving the death of his entire family, he enjoyed a favourable reputation at the beginning of his reign. However, in time, his inability to reform the French monarchy, his lack of morals, and his foreign policy on the European stage lost him the support of his people, and he died as one of the most unpopular kings of France. ·Marquise de Pompadour
o Chevalier: Louis XV's famous mistress, who yearns to reform France. She is an intelligent and politically savvy woman who is a part of the Revolutionary Order.
o In History: The illegitimate daughter of a financier exiled for fraud, Madame de Pompadour was groomed from childhood to become a plaything for the king. She more than fulfilled her destiny by becoming his acknowledged mistress and one of the most powerful women of 18th-century France. Attractive, educated, and highly intelligent, Pompadour spent several fortunes on collecting art and gems. [Wikipedia]

·Peter III
o Chevalier: Ekaterina's abusive husband and heir to the Russian throne.
o In History: Pyotr (Peter) III Fyodorovich (Russian: Пётр III Фëдорович, Pyotr III Fyodorovitch) was Emperor of Russia for six months in 1762. According to most historians, he was mentally immature and very pro-Prussian, which made him an unpopular leader. He was supposedly assassinated as a result of a conspiracy led by his wife, who succeeded him to the throne as Catherine II. [Wikipedia]

·Queen Marie Leszczynska
o Chevalier: Queen of France, wife of Louis XV. She carries around a talking skull named Belle. She is interested in the psalms and plays the part of a silent manipulator as well, but with less malicious intent than others.
o In History: Maria Karolina Zofia Felicja Leszczyńska was a queen consort of France and a Polish princess. She married King Louis XV of France. Louis XV was a notorious womanizer, and several of his mistresses-particularly the glamorous Madame de Pompadour-eventually eclipsed Queen Marie's social status at Versailles. Most of his affairs were with her knowledge, and she either simply accepted them, or was powerless to stop them. [Wikipedia]

·Queen Mary Charlotte
o Chevalier: Queen of England, and wife of George III, Mary Charlotte is actually Mary Charlotte’s younger sister. However, when the real Queen died, her sister was used as a vessel for the queen’s soul, just as Lia and d’Eon.
o In History: Queen Charlotte, (Duchess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz) was the queen consort of George III of the United Kingdom. Queen Charlotte was a patroness of the arts, known to Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others. She was also an amateur botanist who helped establish Kew Gardens. George III and Queen Charlotte had 15 children, 13 of whom survived to adulthood. [Wikipedia]

·Robin (undecided)
o Chevalier: The Queen's young page. He dislikes being treated as a child. Despite his age, he is earnest and resourceful, and his loyalty to Queen Marie and his companions is steadfast. Robin greatly looks up to the other three members of the Four Musketeers group, and prefers to wield a flintlock pistol in combat.

·Teillagory (fictional)
o Chevalier: D'Eon and Lia's fencing instructor, Teillagory is a legendary knight in the days of Louis XIV. He carries an antique sword which was given to him by Louis XIV. Teillagory lost his only son in a war several years prior to the start of the series.

·Vorontsov
o Chevalier: A Russian spy under the Duc d'Orleans' protection and former lover of the Empress, Voronstov is also a Poet.
o In History: Count Alexander Romanovich Vorontsov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Рома́нович Воронцо́в) was the Russian imperial chancellor during the early years of Alexander I's reign. [Wikipedia]
