yeah im down. actually im still undecided if i am going. i mean, i want to go. i just dont have anyone to go with. i know you will be there and like 3 co-workers will be there but i just dont have anyone to ride with me. whats your ride situation like? i would drive, i dont even care, i just dont want to make the drive by myself i dont think. anyways, if you get this before you leave tomorrow you can give me a call or something. 707-328-5688. im very tempted to go either way. so yeah, if you get this give me a call, otherwise i might see you there.
Dave- I'm student teaching sixth grade right now. I'm starting a poetry unit next week- my cooperating teacher hates poetry and skims over the unit, so he said I can do whatever I want. I want to get the kids really excited about this, and I thought of you. Do you have any ideas? Projects I can do, or poets sixth graders would like?
sounds like fun. im sure you'd be a good teacher. i had a poetry unit in fifth grade and i never stopped writing. so you never know the effect you will have on someone.. i suggest starting in group poetry projects or even starting as a class.. and then move into even pairs and then by themselves. kids feel akward about poetry and you should make sure they know that there is different kinds... comical, emotional, spiritual.. it doesnt have to be sad, which is usually the stereotype. starting in groups or as a class will ease some of the tension and it will be alot of fun for them to share their group projects. try incorporating poetry into the pictures, and visa versa. have them do a collage to go with a poem, or start a poem from a collage. one place you might get some good ideas: www.languageisavirus.com and scroll down to "writing experiements". there are some fun ones in there. you could try out alot of those. hope i helped. good to hear from you.
Thank you for all of the ideas! It's funny that you thought of collage too. My living room is now filled with 120 pounds of magazines I got Tower to donate. I wanted the kids to make collages that illustrate the images they find in poetry, but I kind of like your idea of letting the poetry come from the collages better... Anyways, thank you again.
