Question about car insurance:

Is anyone familiar with the way car insurance works? Specifically, I let a friend of mine borrow my car and she scraped the side of it while parking. Would I be able to go through her insurance to have it repaired or am I doomed to having to use my own? I've tried researching, but all I can really find is stuff about the latter ( Read more... )

Wiki has an answer.

The only thing I found that speaks to the driver's Insurance was that only things that your doesn't cover that hers would would be covered. most often if her policy reflects yours and is simmilar, your's would be the primary policy being used first and hers secondary if it had superior coverage to yours.

I wonder if, in a situation like this, my premium would increase as if I had gotten into an accident or what.

That sucks, but makes sense, I suppose. Luckily she hit an inanimate object (she was parking in a garage and scraped a cement support), so I wonder how that would affect one's insurance.

I'd comment but I think our two systems are different. If I was in the car when it happened it would be covered. If I wasn't in the car when it happened then it would be screwed.

From my limited understanding her insurance has nothing to do with it since it's car insurance. As in, you're insured on your car. She's insured on her car. I don't think her insurance would cover her in your car. I think you're screwed. Is it a bad scratch?

*Shrugs.*

But what do I know. I'm just Canadian, eh?

Your insurance travels with your car. I'm pretty sure her's will pick up whatever yours doesn't cover. I also think there is a certain amount of time that you have to put the claim in. Hasn't your car been like that for a year? I guess you could say it just happened...

I know that my insurance will cover it; I was just trying to avoid using mine at all for fear that my premium will increase. And yeah, it's been like that for almost exactly two years, but I was planning to tell them it just happened.

It varies by state, but if you were in Texas, her insurance could pay for it. Just ask her for her insurance info and try, they will tell you if they wouldn't cover it.

how bad is the scrape? i did the whole passenger side of my friend's car a few months ago. i took it to a local autobody and they did what they called a brush touch up. it only took them a couple of hours and cost me just $150. you couldn't even tell that i did anything to the car. maybe look into getting that done? have your friend pay for it, of course, but it's cheap enough that neither one of you has to go through insurance.

It's not totaled or anything, but they'll need to use one of those things to suck out a dent and then fix up the paint. I plan to take it to someone for an estimate either way.
