I'll have to look for this book... Anderson is a factory town as well--much of Indiana is factory country and has always been extremely conservative politically as well as religiously. The fact that we voted democratic this time around is very historic, and in my mind it demonstrates the impact of the current economy. It won't matter much if the prices of homes remain high if no one can afford to buy them.

Yeah, I guess 'everyone' with good fortune is conservative right up until the minute they realize that bad things can happen to anybody and that people actually don't entirely make their own destiny.
But it seems the original post here was the opposite question? Why would people who have the most to gain from a democrat still vote republican?
Yeah-- WV's electoral votes surprised me too :-(... So did Virgina's :-)
I'm reading What's the Matter With Kansas right now to try and get a handle on the same thing. So far it's telling me when and how this political phenomenon happened, but not exactly why. Of course, that could also have something to do with my not being even halfway through the book yet. I assume he'll get to it. :)
