Well, it turns out I made a realy good decision coming to Memphis instead of Villanova. Len announced today that he turned down the offer there and consequently will be staying here. Caputo also announced that he will be leaving Villanova to go to Syracuse's Religion department. That leave two BIG vacancies at their house, and only holes on the ( Read more... )

what a delight to read that you are becoming far more content with your academic venue. sounds like everything has the potential for coming up roses for you.

i had a hearty laugh when i read in your previous post: "I played tennis today with my friend James, it was exciting to use my body for something beside embodying my mind."

i know what you mean experientially that when you get into the groove of a physical activity you don't feel yourself thinking -- perhaps consider that our perception of those experiences reflects the cultural saturation of the dualistic conception of self as a mind and a body rather than as a unified entity -- even to the point of there not being a single word to use for embodied consciousness.

The more that I reflect on my situation, the more that I realize that this may be the best as I can do. MY GRE scores simply exclude me from the only three places where I can easily envisage myself as prospering more fully: Nortre Dame, Penn State, and Stony Brook. I've found out that Len is interested in the space issue as well (though from the Deleuzian perspective), so all I need here is an aesthetics person, and with three open hires, it remains a possibility that they will get someone who does that sort of thing.

Your second comment is very interesting. I had not thought of the linguistic situation in such a way, but you are of course correct: the language itself supports the dualisms-monisms found so frequently throughout philosophy. Hmmm, what could our word be for an embodied consciousness? I suppose we would have to make a new word... Would this even count as a 'consciousness' anymore, in any currently '"meaningful" sense of the word? Things for me to think about...

What was your thesis for your Kant presentation?

Well, please don't take it personal, but I try not to put too many of my pseudo-'professional' ideas in print in this medium. Particularly because I've already had an idea stolen and found it in print. Sorry, I just don't feel comfortable putting things down with so many philosophy students on the web.

Suffice it to say that it was on Kant's theory of genius and its relation to a theory of art history.
