noetickerf has asked me if I believe in some quality of the human being that cannot be explained by brain processes. The simple answer is "yes," but the more complicated answer is what exactly that could be? Well, I'm not sure I can furnish an answer to that. Funny. I just started having this conversation with someone in my own journal. I think there are a few ways to approach this question. One way is through Kant who, following Rousseau, differentiates between normative authority (constraint by norms) and causal power (constraint by facts). The difference is that, within the normative dimension of human experience, I am bound only by that which I acknowledge as binding.
