I've pretty much given up on real_philosophy. they're super nitpicky and like the discussions just don't turn out to be anything but arguing which you would think would be logical...but i digress......
it was surprising talking to Mikey today...he's doing sales for some company or something. it was odd talking to him about philosophy...the training is different. really tells you how important learning philosophy under the right people is though.

As far as Mike goes, just keep in mind that he's in some sort of new-age cult. That could be where his difficulties are coming from.

yeah, the cult thing...he told me that i should come to some meeting he goes to once a month....er....not so excited about that...EXTREMELY skeptical

In my mind, there is a certain irresponsibility in lit. theory in the way these ideas are exposed to young minds. If no guidance is provided into the historical and philosophical context surrounding the work, there is no possible way to understand what it is that the author is trying to express. You seemed to be struggling with Derrida yourself, if I remember correctly.
