Painting and Poll Results

I'll give you the juicy stuff first! Here are the answers to the poll/quiz:

1. Merleau-Ponty: keys here were phrasessuch as "rediscover within the exercise of seeing and speaking" and "living references." False leads include the word "interrogation," and the phrase "form[ing] our new instruments," which many of you bit upon replying with Foucault. Kudosto niveau, as he was the sole person to reply correctly (all other questions had at least two correct respondents).

2. Foucault: Most of you went with Maurice, but consider this sentence "Neither [language or vision] can be reduced to the other's terms" alongside the name of Foucault's major work Les mots et les choses, "words and things" or as improperly translated The Order of Things. Merleau-Ponty sought the meaning of language within the visible, this was Foucaults way of separaing himself from his old teacher.

3. Nietzsche: Apparently y'all recognized Nietzsche's concern for the particular in the face of the universal! I was hoping for some Heidegger confusion here, but should have recognized that no one would fall for that: since when would he write such a sentence without at least a few Greek words thrown in there.

4. Hegel: 90% got this one right. No explanation seems necessary. I was hoping that the language might be reminiscent of Heidegger with all the withdrawing talk, but the idea of totality is so foreign to Heidegger (take that, Levinas) that I suppose that was just not plausible.

5. Heidegger: I found this quote in the Nietzsche lectures, so I was hoping for some crossover there or else conceptually with Foucault. There is a two page section in these lectures that could be used as a guide book for reading Foucault pre-1976 centering on the discursive formation of concepts. Of course, Heidegger is crediting Nietzsche with this development, so it makes sense to find this relation given Foucault's infauation with Friedrich.

So who won? I don't know! Well, I know who scored highest, but I don't know her: congratualtions, whytmn_gurl2, your score of 4/5 is good enough to claim the prize! If you want to get in touch via e-mail, I could mail it to you. It's a CD I made, very exciting, eh?

Second place honors go to xenikos, madamebovary, and noetickerf tied with 3/5 (the latter two submitting identical ballots). An unclaimed prize will be cut into three pieces each of which is to be mailed to to each of you. Enjoy!

So I painted my room today, a color called "Blueberry-Twist". Why do all the color names have such lame-ass names? I mean, I almost bought something called "Nature's Whisper" for the trim. I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I bought something called clay-pebble instead. As soon as I get my furniture back in place (I'm on the sofa tonight, ouch!), I'll post pictures. Oooh, the den of a philosopher! don't worry, if you aren't wearing any perfume that smells like an old book, they are relatively harmless.

PS: I have become obsessed with this album lately!

PPS: what is this "tags" garbage that I can now add to my post? What the hell is that for? Are posts becoming searchable or something?
