Publicity Notice

Aug 20, 2005 11:02

Since I will be officially involved with students from this point on in my academic career and yet do not desire to discontinue my journal, I will be posting the majority of my musings in the future under the friends filter. I have also moved many old public posts behind the filter and included several of you who have introduced yourselves on my ( Read more... )

it's a good idea... i was surprised how many of my students found me online when i was teaching... one of the first things i did was go back through and make large portions of my journal friends only... there's no reason they need to read about some things!

are you TAing? I really enjoyed my stint as a TA...

Misunderstood, but happily so. I can safely say that I do not endeavor to be understood, only comprehended.

Hello, we are strangers. I found you through spookythinking. I've read this piece of yours a few times. And I had planned on writing something in response, but my ignorance holds me back. You see, I have a BS in Math and a BA in Theatre, but I've never taken a Philosophy course, per se. However, my life seems to be leading me in that direction, and I seem to be following it. And now I've ended up most recently reading these certain words of yours. For instance,

Our task is still cognitive and autonomous, just not seeking after any sort of objective truth autonomous to our own questioning regard.

Philosophy should be viewed as a culural artifact as opposed to a search for truth.I won't say "I understand," but perhaps, "I want to comprehend." And I am impressed, and I am excited by your words ( ... )

First off, thank you for your thoughtful and flattering comments! It always surprises me when thinks I say and write have an influence (no matter how small) on other folks. Soemthing I should get used to, I suppose.

With the two degrees you have, it sounds like philosophy is the right place for you. If you are thinking about an MA, there are a few things you need to know. Are you familiar with the continental-analytic divide? You sort of have to choose sides (with notable exceptions) before you choose a school. Analytics study figures like Donald Davidson, W.V. Quine, Gottlob Frege, Ludwig Wittgenstein, etc. and tend to be focused on "problems" like how one knows one is not a brain in a vat. Continentals study figures like Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Michel Foucault, and Gilles Deleuze and tend to focus on developing concepts and methods. Forgive me if this is redundant to you. Myself, I tend toward the continental, but still read a lot of analytic philosophy (know thine enemy, as they say ( ... )

Hi, I noticed that the public entries are really old. Is the anything going on "behind them"? If yes, then would you mind granting me access? I've just started a LJ myself, and I'm "collecting" interesting friends at the moment. If you still write it, your journal might be interesting to read.

In fact, I got the link here from spookythinking community. Is the community still active? I am not yet a graduate, but I almost am, i.e. I'm a final-year PPE student at Essex, and will definitely take up a PhD or MA (depending on which uni, US or UK, accepts me) in 2007/2008. Can I get access to the community as well?
