Adrienne Rich. Now there's someone who was a household name for me as a kid. My mom liked her work and spoke of her highly now and again. Then, her name came up again in my Social Psychology of Sex and Gender class in my sr. year of college.

Great poem you chose of the great lady of letters Ms. Rich.

Her appearance on campus today is being sponsored by some sort of council for Gender and Sexuality studies.

I'm not surprised to hear that. As you may know, Ms. Rich wrote a break-through essay titled "Compulsory Heterosexuality." It's been heavily critiqued for having a lot of limitations since being published decades ago, but the piece apparently added a lot to the then quite nascent modern discourse on sexuality and gender.

Wow. I've used the phrase "compulsory heterosexuality" for years and never knew that it was originated by her.

Looks as if you ARE the one in our home who is truly well-read!
