You're right. Reality TV is always more about the TV than the reality, even on a show like this. It's spectacle more than substance.
Of course, being me, I can kind of see it from a couple of different angles. On the one hand--without the ostentatious spectacle, there wouldn't be a show, and NO families would be getting the support, maybe.
On the other...maybe someone needs to make a smaller-scale show to fit that niche? Random Acts of Kindness?

Of course the reality is that an extremely small percentage of people who could use this type of assistance are getting it. I can easily see how someone would feel bitter about seeing others being singled out for special treatment.
Perhaps the show helps to demonstrate that people in need exist, to those who are far outside of reality and do not realize such things? That it isn't just the homeless person that you might see on your way to work, but that people with faces and families are in various levels of need. To bring that point home, gently nudging people to help out in their own communities could go far.

yeah, and those real charities are great. so far whenever i've taken part in charity I haven't really done much or had an effect (relay for life...lotta fun but not much visible results).... here you can really see the changes.
i just couldn't figure out why this show won emmy's either. it's not all that great. I think it did... or at least kathy griffin complained that it did?
