why I'd be going to hell if jews believed in it

So, first I've realized that facebook is blogging for the lazy people and that Twitter is the ultimate lazyman's livejournal.  I think that, while I still write journal entries in my head sometimes, facebook makes it too easy for me to just blurt out random messages and share silly links.  so that's why I"m not blogging here as much.  Not that my ( Read more... )

*Hugs* I get this. I totally get this.

You're right. Reality TV is always more about the TV than the reality, even on a show like this. It's spectacle more than substance.

Of course, being me, I can kind of see it from a couple of different angles. On the one hand--without the ostentatious spectacle, there wouldn't be a show, and NO families would be getting the support, maybe.

On the other...maybe someone needs to make a smaller-scale show to fit that niche? Random Acts of Kindness?

Have any desire to be a producer, my friend? There's your show. *g*

I like that statement very much, that reality TV is more about the TV than the reality.

Of course the reality is that an extremely small percentage of people who could use this type of assistance are getting it. I can easily see how someone would feel bitter about seeing others being singled out for special treatment.

Perhaps the show helps to demonstrate that people in need exist, to those who are far outside of reality and do not realize such things? That it isn't just the homeless person that you might see on your way to work, but that people with faces and families are in various levels of need. To bring that point home, gently nudging people to help out in their own communities could go far.

that is a real point. and i can see that it does amazing things for the community. there are hundreds of local people involved in each ep and I can imagine that they are greatly affected by the experience.

sad that there are that many obtuse people who are unaware of the suffering around them unless it wears cardboard shoes and a sign 'will work for food'

there's was a RAK show I think.... well there was a show where they gave millions (or really large check) to random unsuspecting people who were 'good'... I resented that one too.

no desire to produce! and certainly not reality!!! gasp!!

not when they'r cancelling really well written tv left and right (very afraid for dollhouse and Sarah Connor on Fox)

Expressing your feelings isn't bad and definitely wouldn't lead to hell (if we believed in one). I agree with what hydrogeek said about the show inspiring people to go out and help in their own communities. Even spreading out the aid, it wouldn't affect enough people to make a difference. But don't just go by what you see on this show, there are plenty of charities out there that AREN'T getting the screen time and are doing the same thing.

awww... ya'll are conversing! love it!

yeah, and those real charities are great. so far whenever i've taken part in charity I haven't really done much or had an effect (relay for life...lotta fun but not much visible results).... here you can really see the changes.

i just couldn't figure out why this show won emmy's either. it's not all that great. I think it did... or at least kathy griffin complained that it did?

Hm, I dunno. I don't watch the show. But there's a really hot guy who has the same show concept in canada. And he's got a massive following.

yeah a large part of my roommate's deal with the show is Ty Pennington. Who i did love on Trading Spaces and he's not bad on this either.

oh how shallow the world! (so says the girl who is now watching Seeker on hulu any chance she can get just so she can count the minutes that Richard goes shirtless. The torture ep was beautiful!!)
