Because the Virgin Megastore in Chicago (a block from where I work) is closing, everything is 25% off right now. I went and hit the sale during lunch, and came away with only a set of blank note cards in cute Scandi prints and the Criterion Collection release of Unfaithfully YoursThings I wanted, but they didn't have ( Read more... )

If you weren't moved to buy music at the time, then perhaps you don't need music at this moment. In which case, you don't have to buy any.

Bummer that Virgin Megastore is closing. It was one of my favorite destinations. :(

Of course, your post and the replies kind of illustrate why it's closing. :P

Is it pretty well picked over?

BTW, I think it's all Virgins that are closing...

In fact, for a lot of DVDs, their "sale" is actually a price increase. Virgin's everyday DVD prices are never that great, but you used to be able to find a lot of decent movies for $10. Now, though, if you go to the big table that used to be full of $10 movies, they're being sold for 25% off the regular price, which makes them at least $15 each.

I tried to see if some of the expensive TV shows were on sale for a decent price. Both Deadwood and Rome were being sold for 25% off $100, compared to $49.99 and $68.99 on Amazon, respectively. The Wire was on sale for 25% off $59.99, which puts it only a couple dollars ahead of Amazon's $47.99. And a lot of the individual movies I checked out were probably more expensive than they would have been at Virgin before the store started going out of business, and were certainly more expensive than elsewhere. I think the store is depending on people who see "25% off" and assume that the price will be decent, without thinking about how much they'd have to pay elsewhere.

I agree with you. However, Criterion Collection DVDs are usually only 10% off at Amazon, so I felt fine buying one of those. I may yet get more.

Also, I saw the same stationery set for full prize and a fancy paper store in Wicker Park--again, I felt like I was actually getting a deal.

This is all complicated also by the fact that I can get 25% off most indie music through my old workplace, so I'm not going to buy it on sale at Virgin.
