[Scene: Mr. Z's study. I'm puttering on the computer.]

Me: So I finally listened to the new Panda Bear album because of Pitchfork*. It's actually pretty good!
Mr. Z: Oh, I haven't heard it yet. I should download it.
Me: (Pause.) I got it from your computer, kiddo.
Mr. Z: Huh. Guess I forgot about it.

I have a Christmas card for you and Mr Z. May I have your address so that I may send it to you? E-mail me, please.

I address that issue by keeping a smart playlist called Unplayed which includes all tacks whose play count is zero. I've another one for unrated tracks.

It vexes me that I can't attach a rating to an entire podcast, Rating individual episodes is silly.

We do not want to talk about how few rated songs I have.

How much of a backlog of unlistened material do you have? Or material that you've listened to at some point, but not since you purchased your current computer?

There are 148 items in my playlist of all unplayed songs. Most of those are from CDs I have had for a good long time but have only ripped recently. Due to my crazy smart playlist machinations, new material usually doesn't stay unplayed for long, but lately I've been all about the podcasts.

Shamefully, there is one album among those 148 items which I bought from iTMS but have not yet taken the time to hear.

I am too lazy at the moment to look up when I bought this MacBook, so I'll use May 1 as the purchase date. I have 1348 tracks which have not been played since then, out of a total of 3754 in my library.
