“Hello sweetie. “

“River?”

“Doctor, I need your help.”

-----

“Wait, hold on River, where are we going?”

River pushes and turns buttons and levers on the TARDIS console. The TARDIS shakes and tilts.

“She can fly the TARDIS!” Donna says in amusement. Then she realizes what that might mean. She turns to River. “Wait-YOU CAN FLY THE TARDIS?”

River smiles. “Learned from the best.”

Donna can see it in River’s eyes, just like the last time, how in awe she is of the Doctor. How deep her feelings run for him. Donna wishes she knows, understands what this whole thing means, but deep down she knows it really isn’t her place. There’s something truly remarkable going on here, between the two of them-- and neither River nor the Doctor fully understands what it is. A curious thing, this whole time travelling business, she thinks. And not for the first time, Donna is struck by how vast and wonderfully complicated the universe is.

The Doctor turns to River and demands, “River, tell me where we’re going.”

“To save someone.” River pushes a button and the TARDIS tilts on its side.

“Hold on!”

----

They land.

“--- It’s not supposed to make that noise, you leave the breaks on.”

“Yes, well, It’s a bril-“

“Shush! You two! Where are we?” Donna asks as the three of them emerge from the TARDIS.

“This is the Asuran homeworld. We’re on the Asuran homeworld.” The Doctor says, surprised.

“What? Who are the Asurans?” Donna is getting impatient. She looks around and sees metal. Buildings upon buildings made of shiny, pointy metal. Donna feels a chill run down her back.

“Bad people, err-- race. They were created by these people called the Ancients to combat---“

River interjects. “No time for explanations. We need to go.”

-----

River leads them through a doorway and turns left into a narrow hall. She holds up a device that bleeps (Donna assumes it’s some kind of life detector), and then stops abruptly.

River waves the life detector around. “She’s here.”

“Who?” The Doctor asks, intently.

“Elizabeth Weir.”

-----

They enter a small room where some sort of stasis pod is attached to a wall in the corner. Donna sees someone is inside, attached to tubes and machines, breathing steadily.

“Who is she? Why was she captured by the Asurans?” The Doctor asks as both he and River tries quicky to look for the button that releases the stasis pod.

As always, River remains cryptic. “Someone important, who still has a lot of things to do. So we need to get her out of here.”

Donna looks at Elizabeth. She’s wearing leather, her face pinched like she’s dreaming. No-not dreaming, but having a nightmare. The pain, oh the pain, she can see it in Elizabeth’s face. Donna feels --

“I found it!” The Doctor declares triumphantly. He pushes a red button and the stasis pod opens.

All three of them hurry to the pod and removes the tubes carefully.

They wait.

Then--

Elizabeth breathes deep. She opens her eyes and looks around, confused.

“P-P-Professor Song?”

“Yes, my dear Elizabeth, it’s me.” River smiles, breathes a sigh of relief.

“No, this isn’t real. This isn’t-“

“Sweetheart, it is. We’ve come to save you.”

The Doctor and Donna pass confused looks at each other, but questions can hold till later.

“You’re safe now.” Donna adds, feeling the need to offer comfort.

They help Elizabeth out of the stasis pod. Donna sees Elizabeth fully now, as she tries to adjust her balance. Donna wonders who she might be- a woman of strength, resilience, conviction.

An alarm sounds all over the facility.

The Doctor looks up at the flickering red lights. “Oh bollocks.”

River looks at the door. “We need to leave. Now.”

Donna puts her hand on Elizabeth’s back and helps usher her out of the room.

They run.

The Doctor shoots with his sonic screwdriver while River shoots with her gun. Donna stays on Elizabeth and tries to shield her when the gunfire starts.

-----

They hurry inside the TARDIS.

The Doctor and River go straight to the console. Donna keeps Elizabeth close.

This time, it’s the Doctor who says: “Hold on!”

-----

They manage to escape, but just barely.

-----

“Doctor, this is Elizabeth Weir, the best and brightest student I ever had.” River smiles towards Elizabeth.

“Elizabeth, this is the Doctor. The most amazing and infuriating man I have ever known.”

“Oy!” Donna protests.

“Oh, forgive me. And this is the always brilliant Donna Noble.”

Donna harrumphs.

“You’re safe now, Elizabeth,” Donna says again. “You can trust us.”

Elizabeth looks at River for some kind of confirmation, and River nods.

“Elizabeth! So nice to meet you!” The Doctor shakes her hand. “I’m the Doctor. Time Lord. And this is the TARDIS.” The Doctor waves his hands around proudly.

“How did you end up with the Asurans?” The Doctor asks then.

Elizabeth tells them her story.

----

They drop River off at the next safest planet. She promises them she’ll be fine, and says to Elizabeth:

“Never ever stop being amazing Elizabeth Weir.”

----

“How is this--- it’s bigger on the inside.” Elizabeth circles the TARDIS main room.

The Doctor smiles. “That’s what they all say.”

The Doctor walks towards her. “So, Elizabeth. Come with us?”

Donna nods in agreement. Donna likes Elizabeth. This woman-who’s accomplished so much but remains humble; sacrificed herself to save her people-her strength, her capacity for love-is something Donna cannot help but admire.

“We’ll have lots of adventures and we’ll see if we can find a way to get rid of the nanites.”

Elizabeth laughs, scoffs. “What? You’ll try and fix me?”

“Well, I am the Doctor.”

Then--

“Oooh!” The Doctor snaps his fingers.

Donna rolls her eyes. “Oh god, please no.”

Music starts playing. The Doctor grins like a child, and Donna holds her hands up in surrender.

“… Is that--- Is that Coldplay?” Elizabeth asks.

“Yes it’s Coldplay. He plays it over and over again. He can’t stop. He won’t stop. It’s driving me nuts!”

“I like Coldplay. Deal with it.”

Elizabeth blinks, stunned.

“Yeah, we-ell…” The Doctor tilts his head to the side, “I keep up with Earth pop culture.”

“So what do you say Elizabeth? Come with us?”

“Yeah so you can keep me from killing this dumbo.” Donna points her thumb at the Doctor and smiles.

“Onwards?” The Doctor holds out his hand.

Donna sees Elizabeth make her decision. She takes the Doctor’s hand. Donna smiles.

“Onwards.”
