We seem to have some neighborhood pranksters.

Last Saturday night, I stayed up too late trying to get stuff done despite the fact that I had to get up early the next morning.  I finally went to bed after 11 PM, and just as I was falling asleep, our doorbell rang.  I hurriedly got out of bed, and went and opened the door.  No one was there.  (I

Oh, no! That's awful. I hope the police can drive by at those times - that might deter them. Same with a motion sensor light that turns on when someone approaches. Just having a light come on *before* they reach your door might startle them and make then leave before ringing the bell.

I vote for disconnecting your doorbell for the time being! At least that way you won't be staying awake listening for them to come back.
