Hi, guys,
Don't mean to spam, but I'm upgrading my library to some intermediate level books and figured these books have served we well and could do so for someone else as well.
"A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar" seiichi makino & michio tsutsui. paperback, 634 pages. Published by The Japan Times. This book is what put me over the hump when I was studying in Japan. I read this thing through once, and things suddenly started to click. Has invaluable appendixes and numerous entries. I actually just recommend everyone go out and buy this book- it's hard to find outside of Japan, though.
"Kodansha's Pocket Kanji Guide" Published by Kodansha, 536 pages. A complete paperback guide to the 1,006 Shin-kyouiki kanji. Over 10,000 common compunds, stroke order, and stroke and on/kun yomi lookup indexes.

"All the grammar really needed for speech and comprehension, without trivia or archaic material, clearly presented with many shortcuts, timesavers...self study or class use, for a beginner, as a refresher... an ideal supplement to phrase study" Yeah, this came in handy ^^
Eyewitness Travel Guides' "Japanese Phrase Book" Pocket-sized, prefect for travel. Shopping, numbers, menu guide, hotels, everyday phrases, time, mini-dictionary, health, useful sentences, travel, pronounciation, business phraes. 127 pages.
"Japanese Beyond Words: how to walk and talk like a native speaker" Andrew Horvat. Stone Bridge Press 176 pages. "501 Japnese Verbs" second edition. REALLY helpful in learning conjugation of the most popular verbs. Barron Books 585 pages.
"Kanji Power" John Millen. Tuttle press. 192 pages. Has thirty quizzes, nine progress tests, three review tests of the 240 most essential kanji. Learn their compounds, meaning, and stroke order. Practice space to write out each kanji.
"The complete Japanese Adjective Guide" Ann Tarumoto. Tuttle language library 249 pages. Complete explanation of every adjective formulation/comprehensive exercises and drills/romanized.
Discovery Channel's "Insight Guide Japan" More of a book focusing on information ABOUT the places of Japan, rather than a travel book.
