impact of Gangnam STYLE on learner's culture

Hi all,

Lately a Korean singer who goes by the singer name PSY is making big waves on youtube and he is even being invited onto American shows, like ellen, good morning America, and the tonight show through his July 2012 hit single, Gangnam STYLE.

How is this experience for you, as a Korean student or Korean speaker?
Does it embarrass you, or do think ( Read more... )

Urgh, same hear. I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the radio (in Germany!) and, I don't want to be elitist, but it annoyed me because all of a sudden everybody thinks it's cool and then there's me, who had to put up with people disregarding my taste in music because the lyrics weren't English.

I think it'll die down again. Remember that Numa Numa song? *silence* Yep, pretty much what I mean.

It's ok. Pros & Cons.
It's getting a bit annoying though. I went to a Korean restaurant that that was pretty much ALL they played. It gets old after a while.

The Ask A Korean blog had a great post on it. Particular the part with TigerJK hit home for me.

At this point, I like the parodies better. Like the Pervert Style and Mitt Romney Style. :D

I was in college when the Macarena was hot (yes, I know, I'm OLD lol).

This reminds me a lot of that. People sing it, but they don't want more, they just want that. Maybe it is where I live, but I've heard people say they think it is Chinese, Japanese, or even Spanish, but few seem to realize it is Korean.

Unfortunately, I think it is more likely it will fade away after a while and become one of those songs people play at their wedding so they can watch drunk people try to dance to it. You know, like the Time Warp. : (

Well personally it's just been kind of annoying... people ask me to show them the dance and they pronounce it wrong.
Then of course the hypocrites who hated k-pop so much before or refused to listen to it =/
I don't hate the song yet and still think it's pretty cool, but my school makes the juniors embarrass themselves and dance to different songs on stage, and I can already say this is the song they'll make me dance to =/

I'm coming late to the party, but this cracked me up:
it feels like I'm in some alternate universe where all the people are Americans, but the entertainment is not in English.
I listen only to K-pop, so this is a perfect description of my life. (I watch Korean drama, too.) My friends think it's weird, but don't give me any grief. I just bought a ticket to the Infinite concert that's coming! And I'm a 68 year old Westerner. Yeah, maybe it is weird. ;)
