Oh boy... No short cuts with this one. I guess I'll need to start paying closer attention to the differences between these. Thanks for all the great examples!

The meaning is almost always different.

For some roots you can use only one of these suffixes

I am not sure there's a pattern, unfortunately.

I have the impression that -ический has more abstract meaning, "something connected with an academic field whose name ends in -ика", e.g. экономический is connected with экономика.

And -ичный is more often in non-academic common language.

It's just my hypothesis and needs to be checked.

Another pair for your collection: техничный (uses or needs lots of good technics) технический (purely mechanical or routine).

Never thaught about a pattern here...
