I am slowly learning ASL as I teach it to Dagny and the other children I babysit. Watching your video was like watching a French film. I know just enough for it to drive me CRAZY not knowing all of it. :)
Most of what I know is related to children and things children want or need to say though.
I love that ASL helps Dagny gain confidence in her ability to communicate. If she signs something when she says it I can understand. Today we were outside and she signed "nice" while telling the other kids to be nice. :)
I learned a little years ago when i worked at a camp for adults with disabilities. most were hearing folks but could not communicate other ways for any number of reasons. I wish I were more fluent but it is so hard for me to understand when people use ASL conversationally. Even at a slow pace it is like a blur.
Yes, visual languages seem to benefit non-verbal autistic children, down syndrome children, etc. Much of the frustration around these developmental disabilities is the "inability to communicate". Hence why sedative medications (or worse, behavioral techniques that always involve shocking), are prescribed first.
