Character Info
Character Name: Jack Aubrey
Character’s Age: 34
Fandom: Aubrey-Maturin (specifically from the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World with elements of book canon)
Timeline: a few weeks post-film
Game history:
Jack first arrived in town alone, and he wandered about until he ran into Galatea, who helped lead him to the hospital and to Hope. Hope, in turn, made a phone call that helped Jack track down his best friend, Stephen, who had run into Miata. They reunited soon after and it was adorable and went back to their house, 230 Marigold, soon settling in.
Jack was also witness to the Claymores' abilities--he was present at a bout between Clare and Miata, passing by and helping an injured Monkey escape.
As they'd arrived during the foul weather, Jack and Stephen did all they could to keep warm and dry. Jack worked to repair the roof when it caved in from rain and melted snow, completely missing Hehsebamon's broadcast of Rufus Shinra and Garcian Smith's corpses pinned up to a wall in S-Mart. This was a combination of his own ignorance of the phones and Stephen's intervention--he never mentioned it to Jack, and Jack never found out.
Some time later, Jack and Stephen heard the sound of a ship's cannons firing and took to the shore to investigate, where they met Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann. Jack Aubrey, Liz, and Jack Sparrow also rescued a half-drowned Horatio Hornblower, taking him to one of the ships to be nursed back to health. Jack and Stephen brought what little was left of their supplies from home onto the ship and, along with the others, offered food and shelter to all the inhabitants of Bell Pointe. Soon after the Heaven Smiles invaded the town, and Jack met Archie Kennedy, William Bush, and James Norrington, who also stayed on the ship. The whole group devised a plan to fight the Smiles: they would lure them to the beach and fire at them with cannons. They eventually took the fight to the beach.
Appearance:
To wives and sweethearts.
May they never meet.
Jack is a tall, stocky man in his mid-30's. (Keep that in mind--stocky, not portly. Jack's a little sensitive about the 'portly' bit.) According to his doctor he weighs somewhere to the tune of 16 stone (around 224 pounds), and he's probably at or around 6 feet tall. As a captain in the Royal Navy, he carries himself very well--Jack walks and talks with a purpose that shows his honor and his authority. Overall, Jack Aubrey poses a very impressive figure. Adding to this image is his very large collection of battle scars, the most notable being a bit of his right earlobe missing. His blonde hair is a particular bright shade, recognizable enough that he's been nicknamed "Goldilocks", and he wears it long, most often tied neatly in a ponytail. He has blue eyes.
Despite his clear presence as a military man, Jack's more boyish side is also easily spotted. Though he definitely takes his position seriously and presents himself as such, he doesn't hesitate to spring into action when he needs to, jumping, climbing, fighting, and so on. He's a man of good humor, smiling, joking, and laughing often; on a sliiightly related note, he's prone to growing red-faced when drunk. Additionally, he's certainly not 'aged', but he is beginning to show the early signs of wrinkles. Particularly laugh lines.
Jack wears a standard naval uniform. The coat is navy with gold buttons, epaulettes, and other accents. He also has black boots and a belt upon which a sword hangs. His vest and pants are a pale yellow. (He's got a pocketwatch tucked away in a vest pocket too, and he's also got a telescope in there somewhere!) Jack also wears a white neckcloth as well as an undershirt.
History:
Pre-film/book canon 1 (only Early Career)
Pre-film/book canon 2Film canon
Book canon will only be used to fill in what happens pre-film; like in the books, Jack is given command of the HMS Surprise some time after the sinking of the HMS Sophie (with a ship or two in between).
Personality:
Jack Aubrey is, through and through, a man of the service. He has a strong sense of loyalty and duty to his country that is only surpassed by his devotion to his crew, his friends, and his family. He's a natural-born leader and a wonderful fit for the position of captain--strong, confident, and clever, he commands respect from his men and nearly always gets it. However, he's far from a tyrant. Jack can be demanding of his crew, yes, but only when the time asks for it, such as in a desperate battle situation or the like. Overall, he's quite fair to his men, and especially despises excessive punishment; floggings aren't very common on the HMS Surprise, as such.
Past his professional image, Jack's...really very much a kid at heart. He's a very straightforward man: he loves food, women, adventure, bad jokes and puns, and, most of all, the sea. It's not hard to tell when he's interested in any one of those things. When not in a situation in which he needs to be commanding, Jack is jovial and easy-going, ready to make friends with anyone he meets. (Even if he'd wanted to hit them over the head with a chair the night before.) Jack wears his heart right on his sleeve--but, after all's said and done, it's a very big heart, and he cares deeply for those he loves. Though this very lighthearted attitude may make him seem dense to some, he's actually quite intelligent, especially when dealing with naval affairs. He's been on the ocean since he was a young boy, and his love for it hasn't declined since. (Which only makes sense, since it took him a while to get over the initial seasickness.) The sea's his home and he takes joy in every moment he's on it.
Even though he's intelligent, Jack does have a tendency to be ignorant of things that don't have to do with what he needs to know to be a captain or things that he is interested in. For example, Jack and his best friend Stephen are both skilled musicians. However, Stephen's a naturalist, studying plants, animals, the like. Jack knows his violin in and out, but animals are a COMPLETELY different story. (He got a sloth drunk once. It's a very long story.) He does know how to present himself in an important social situation, but Jack can and WILL slip up from time to time. Badly. Especially when given alcohol. He's a bit...bumbling on the land, sad to say, though his heart is always in the right place.
Powers/Abilities:
Jack has no supernatural abilities, sadly!
However! Jack is an utter genius when on the sea. He knows his way around the ocean, having been in the Royal Navy for much of his life, and is a skilled commander and leader. With excellent strategies and a loyal, well-trained crew, he's taken down vessels much stronger and faster than the ones he commands. Jack knows ships and oceans like the back of his hand. Jack is also a skilled mathemetician and astronomer. He's also not bad with a sword and a gun. Once again thanks to the rigors of being in the Navy, Jack isn't lacking in physical strength. In fact, he's more fit than men of his time and can do things like climb up and down ship riggings with great ease.
Jack also knows how to play the violin! For an amateur he's very good.
Limitations:
Jack's a normal human! So, n/a. Also, his knowledge is limited to what's current to 1805, so...he's going to be a biiiit out of date in modern day Bell Pointe.

There was nothing Jack Aubrey loved more than the ocean.
He was loath to admit it, but even his wife, Sophie, could only ever be second: the sea had stolen his heart away years before he had even known she existed. She was dear to him, yes, but how could he see her more often when that required, well, being away from the sea? And so Captain Aubrey stood on the deck of the Surprise at dawn, taller and older and stouter than he had ever been, but with eyes still twinkling as boyishly as the day he first became a midshipman. The ocean breeze, skirting past his cheeks, energized him; every drop of saltwater spray seemed to washed away one of the many wrinkles he'd managed to acquire over thirty-odd years.
But he was an officer of the Royal Navy, not a man sight-seeing.
A wave rocked the ship, then, and it felt as if the entire ship pushed back, waking in a torrent of bells, shouts, and thudding footfalls--it was then that Jack got to work, calling orders and making his rounds about the ship. Truly, the hustle and bustle of the deck of the Surprise was his element--where he was truly at home.
"Ca--Captain! Sir?!" a young voice cried, frantic.
Jack, who had been conversing with the ship's surgeon (a dear friend), turned. "Yes, Mr. Babbington?" But he didn't much need to hear the answer, for she was looming on the horizon, a shadow with billowing white sails... he pulled out his telescope and put it to his eye to further study this new threat. Another ship, floating on the same beautiful waves, was approaching--and fast.
"Stephen," he said simply, still scanning the enemy. Calculations of sea and sky and strategy spun and wove through his head as a single clear blue eye examined the other boat through the scope's lens. She was impressive, certainly, and light and speedy enough to keep up with his own ship. Probably French. ...Yes, most certainly French. But not impressive enough to withstand his men and a few barrages from the Surprise's guns. Though, if they were able to gain and board the Surprise, that would be another story. "I believe it's time for you to return below deck. We may need your assistance presently, and it would be most inconvenient if you were not at your proper station..."
"Jack?"
"Yes, joy?"
"We will still be able to play a bit of Locatelli this morning, correct?"
Jack laughed. "Dr. Maturin, what do you take me for? This little bout will be as easy as kiss my hand. We will have our Locatelli before long; I cannot let my violin rot, nor let the weevils devour your cello, can I, my friend? Now, then..." The captain put his telescope away as Stephen disappeared.
A grin spread slowly across his face as he shouted the familiar order.
"Beat to quarters!"
