Meanwhile broad flames shone out in several places from Mount Vesuvius

A short while ago for my birthday we went on a trip to Pompeii and we took a few photos. I have finally got round to processing them, wrangling GPS data and uploading so here they are:

Here is a short(er) collection of photos from the whole trip including Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Positano and a little bit of Frascati at the end ( Read more... )

Did you have a tour guide for Pompeii?

No. We had the maps and booklets they have for everyone and my text books from a short course I did.

Oh, superb! My wife and I took a very similar trip at the start of this month. :-) I do like your photos; probably unsurprisingly, we took many very similar ones to you. (We didn't stop at Positano, though - we went all the way to Amalfi and came back without stopping at Positano. Didn't like the bus - or having to stand for 90 minutes on the way back.)

Where in Sorrento did you stay? More to the point, where did you eat? :-)

Ooh, I will have to think about that and try and remember names.
It was off season though so quite a lot was closed.

I think he may have been his uncle actually... too busy writing and naturalizing to have his own little Plinies.

That is all true - I have a long running mental block which kicks in no matter how often I read that.
Clearly father would have been more dramatic :-)

We ate lunch outside on Feb 1st.
