No conspiracy was needed to invade Afghanistan beyond the obvious the Taliban were sheltering Al Quaeda, and they were unreliable partners in the oil pipeline business to boot.
Ah you see you aren't thinking far enough back for a decent conspiracy theory - there needs to be a 20 year time frame or so :-) They soon learned that the data had been collected by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, but cast aside when the Soviets withdrew in 1989.
Slightly more seriously I agree that there probably wasn't much more motivation needed to invade last time but I do wonder about how fairly any mining contracts and development will now be handled. Especially after the oil contracting in Iraq.
