Title: A Moment More
Author: faycequevoudras
Claim: Elphaba from Wicked: the Musical
Table: Emotions
Prompt: Desperation
Rating: General
Summary: Elphaba's thoughts after the freeing of the lion cub.

She wouldn't have thought it of him. That he had not been affected by her magic was not surprising to Elphaba. He, like Galinda, were those closest to her and even when they seemed to wrong her, she felt no need to harm. Not them. Not those she called friend. Then he had snatched the cage from the table, grabbing the poor, caged beast and hauling both that brutalized animal as well as Elphaba from the classroom. Fiyero had stunned her before but the shock Elphaba felt now was down to the bone.

Yet there was no time to think of Fiyero and the change that had overcome him in such a short time. They were running, fleet footed as deer as they dodged branches and logs to get away from the school. Was anyone following them? Did the teachers and administrators know who had taken the cub? It wouldn't be long before they were looking for Elphaba, for the witch that had bespelled an entire courtyard her very first day in much the same way the class had been befuddled.

She didn't dare look back, wasn't willing to risk that she might lose her footing, that she might actually see that someone was following them. The trees closed in overhead, the bright heat of the sun a distant thing as Fiyero stopped. Panting, his hand clutched white knuckled around the handle of the crate, he looked not past Elphaba to see if they were being followed but met her gaze. Unwavering and determined.

Elphaba's lungs ached, chest heaving with every breath she drew. Her legs felt weak, knees buckling as she clung tightly to Fiyero's hand. Glancing back the way they'd come, she saw nothing. No trees bending as someone passed, no hint of magic or person on their trail. For the moment, in that moment, they could breathe.

There was no assurance though. They would be found out with time. Until then they could breathe. In that moment, knowing she was not alone in seeking to return a voice to the animals, Elphaba knew she could breathe. If only for a moment more.
