you totally should have done a close up of Shaun's face when he shoots the zombie...and just spray his face with blood in a spritz bottle from off screen. (and just had him flinch slightly).

get shaun, do a camera angle pointed at his face and the sky, spritz him and edit it in. (then use the splatter/thud sounds you already had for the after effect)

you can find some stock/generic gunshot sounds online.
