I'm almost complete my second playthrough. I romanced Fenris is this one, made Merrill upset with me because I wouldn't give her the carving dagger, and brought Anders along permanently since I lost Bethany and wasn't any kind of healer as an archer, obviously. Now. We all know Fenris is a dick sometimes. He says some fucked up things, but in the end it's hard for me not to at least understand his dickitude after the life he lived in slavery - whether he asked for it prior to the event or not. So, when Fenris sneers or bitches or gripes at Merrill about her blood magic or what have you, I, if not my Hawke, take that with a grain of salt considering everything he's been through. It doesn't really excuse some of the awful things he says, but I can understand why he says them. If that makes a lick of sense. And Fenris gets on my nerves sometimes with the shit he says, so this is hardly a biased opinion from a super fan. Talking about what happened to Hawke's mother with Anders and using as a point in some debate was pretty terrible.
Now Anders on the other hand is just making me rage. I completed his little personal quest before Merrill's without distracting the grand cleric because my Hawke wasn't going to let him blackmail her emotionally into doing something so fishy. As preachy and ignorant and hypocritical as he can be, I still managed to mostly like and enjoy his character in my first playthrough, and I loved the dynamic his betrayal put in his relationship with my first Hawke. I was upset, like most others, with what he did to the grand cleric and everyone in the Chantry, but I still appreciated the character and all that jazz. This time, however, I bring that little jackass to Sundermount to finish Merrill's personal quest, and the shithead, with everything he has planned for the Chantry in mind and very much a friend without gaps in his memory, tells her that Marethari's sacrifice was noble and that it sickens him or something that Merrill remains in the world instead of her Keeper.
Really, Anders? Merrill has a lot to deal with and is hardly innocent. I love her character to bits and can't make any kind of excuse for her willful ignorance, but you of all people get to say something like that to her when she's clearly all kinds of upset and in denial AND DUDE YOU HAVE A PLAN TO LASER THE CHANTRY TO INCITE WAR? And then Fenris is like "I agree!" all happily. I don't care if you don't use blood magic, Anders. Chantry. Laser. You're already planning it. Oh, but that's perfectly acceptable because it's for the CIRCLE MAGESSSSSSSSS. And the Templars drive them to use blood magic! They aren't responsible! I just. If I could ever slap a video game character, I think it might be Anders.
Speaking of Merrill though, as the last rant is not really about me being protective of the character - like I said, girlfriend fucked up big time and has to deal with that somehow. I will say I kind of prefer rivaling her and refusing to let her repair the eluvian. She really seems to come to terms with her mistakes, perhaps a bit late, and realize how much she lost to the damned thing. It was a path with such great character growth, and I feel like it's the best possible one for her character.
Up early because life is cruuuuuuel. Maybe I can get to sleep on time tonight, though!
