I suppose the first thing I should really do is ask just precisely where I am. It's obviously not Paris, at least. Paris is a lot less.... old-fashioned. I don't understand how some of these things work, they must be ancient. Chateau-Renaud would love it, I can tell already ( Read more... )

Except this is not the afterlife as humans know it.

Not the-- Just ARE you talking about? Of course we wouldn't know what the afterlife is like, people can't die and then come back to life!

You did not arrive here because you are dead.

This is The City, a dimension apart from all others.

A-- surely you jest, mademoiselle. I'm not so foolish as Albert to believe such a thing. If not because I'm dead, then what would be the purpose of my being here at all?

This isn't exactly the afterlife, but a lot of people do come here after dying.

This is a place called 'the City'. I'd get used to being here, because you're not going to be able to leave, unless you pass on to the true afterlife.

I could explain everything to you, but there's already a well-written guide that explains the situation well.

The City, hm? Rather plain name, I should think. Any idea of when I might 'pass on'? Perhaps I can still help that idiot, even like this..

That was... frighteningly helpful, if not making this place seem even more unreal than it already did.

There's no way to know. Some people are only here for a few days. Others have been here over a year. Some even leave and come back.

I know it all seems very bizarre. But...after a while you'll get to where it will seem a little more ordinary. Not exactly 'normal', however.

Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Autor.

..that's a disenchanting thought. So then I've no way of knowing when I'll be gone from here. I must see what I can do, then, in the time I have.

Ordinary? If I'm here for that long, then I suppose there's really nothing else I can do about it.

Franz d'Epinay, of the barony of Paris, France. Thank you for your help, Autor.

..! It's you! If that thrice-damned Count is with you--

No...The Count isn't here. In fact...you are the only one I've seen here so far of people from back home.

So I've heard, and frankly, it's not such a displeasing thought.

Paris? You can't honestly be telling me you've not heard of it?

That beautiful Haydee chick said she was from there. I think that's pretty much just for your planet. My world ain't like yours.

She may be beautiful, but her accursed Count ruined mine and my friends' lives.

Paris is a beautiful city, run by lies and corruption, that was destroyed by her Count.
