That's wonderful that you can have that sort of personal relationship with your professors! As a TA for big lecture courses (actually, even as an instructor for a smaller class) I have had to be callous sometimes, unfortunately, because it can be so hard to sort out the actual cases that deserve sympathy from the sob stories invented to cover for laziness. If something is up with a student, they definitely get credibility points with me if they tell me ASAP, rather than waiting until weeks later when they realize that they are in trouble.
