quick update: class is over. Studying on July 4th should be outlawed. I mean really, it's unpatriotic. Now I'm just getting things in order for a quick trip to North Cali, which got extended b/c my grandma insisted Marylea and I stay for my great -uncle (1st born son)'s party. For the laptop, I would get a wireless mouse (they're only like 20-30 dollars). They run on batteries, so they last a bit longer.
For the computer, it's been so long since I've used a desktop I have no idea, but if it's just the ball in it that doesn't move anymore, I think you can get those separately.

it's just bothersome to have a mouse on the labtop b/c then I'm balancing two things on my lap. and the desk one is an optical.

For a regular computer mouse with the ball, I used to take the ball out and clean it and the inside 'cause lint starts to build up. I don't know if you have that or the optical mouse though.

well, we had the optical cleaned--the guy said it was filthy, but when we plugged it back in, the computer went haywire. Dunno. I'm considering a track ball.
