Do you get it?

I don't think anyone really understands how much that letter hurt. This is the first thing in my life that I quit because I couldn't do it, because I'm a failure, because I'm not good enough. Any other time when I've quit something I've quit for good reasons. I quit at Famous Footwear because it wasn't as close as Applebees, there was no room to ( Read more... )

do NOT beat yourself up about that, seriously.

I heard SO many stories about how people refd. or coached and they quit because they couldnt stand the way everyone screamed.

It's not cause youre weak, or less of a person or any of that. Its just cause people are assholes and dont know how the meaning of sportsmanship and make it hell on the court.

Most other jobs like that you probably KNOW that you dont want to do that, like for me its being a lawyer or being a politician. I wouldnt be able to put up with the bullshit, and the debating and all that crap, but I dont think I would have even expected youth sports to be like that if it wasnt for all the stories I ended up hearing.

You can't be good at everything. Being a ref for basketball is hard. Your not a bad person for it. You are a better person for realizing that this is something that you are not as good as you would like to be. It could be worse, you could be bad at school, which your not. Dont beat yourself up, its not worth it.

Oh come on Amanda. You're not weak and you know it. *hugs* It's okay to just plain suck at things. You're right, to the rest of us, it isn't a big deal, but I can understand how it is a big deal to you. It is a matter of pride and accomplishment not to be a quitter. But quitting something doesn't make you a quitter. You've recognized something that you're not all that good at and choose not to continue.

It's a simple fact of life that we won't be good at everything that we try. It seems that reffing basketball is also very difficult. Besides, you've never been big into basketball, so it's really not that surprising that you'd find reffing it difficult. But, like you said, you're a softball goddess, which makes it so much easier for you to ref effectively.

I'm glad you tried something new, but I beg you, don't let this eat you up. You're not weak, there's nothing wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with me because I can't sing. There's nothing wrong with me because I don't have what it takes to run a marathon.
