While I was thinking about how, I started thinking about why this happened. And then I found the answer to why. Of course!  Lies, fairy tales, legends, and stories drove them to do this to us. They heard about us, but had believed it all, the stories of a heap of treasure near our caverns. Ooh, you talk about the infinite truth about dragons! And the purple and gold dragon that replaces greed with love... well, that whole last paragraph is really pretty lovely to me.
