If there’s one person in SHINee who isn’t likely to fall for one of the members, then that is none other than Choi Minho. He always, always hangs out with his hyungdeul. It doesn’t matter what group they’re in or what company they’re under; as long as they’re hyungs, he can flirt with them whenever he wanted to. It’s as if Minho enjoys their company more. He goes out with them more often than he does with his fellow members. Rumor in the company has it that he's been making out with Shim Changmin. The two, indeed, had quite a special relationship. However, his relationship with Changmin never developed into something else, something greater. They’re mere friends, really good friends at that, who happen to enjoy each other's company to the point that they're almost always mistaken as lovers. The SHINee members are aware of this, much to Jonghyun’s disbelief and Kibum’s disgust. Tables are somewhat turned when Jonghyun finds out that Minho and Kibum are already dating. He never thought that they’d actually end up liking each other, and this makes his heart ache so much that he almost hears it shatter, break into shards, into pieces.
Jonghyun has always been in love with Minho, but he never mustered the courage to tell him. Especially when Kibum, his best-est friend in the world, starts to crush on Minho and continually pests Jonghyun with his giddy moments. It’s a painful punch on the face when Kibum narrates to him how Minho asked him out, more so when he tells Jonghyun that Minho finally confessed to him.
On the day of Minho and Key’s monthsary, Jonghyun is left in the dorm with the other pair of lovers, Jinki and Taemin. Jonghyun marvels at their cuteness as he watches them cuddle on the living room couch while he’s having coffee. He almost chokes on his drink when the leader and the maknae start to kiss in a steady, sensual way. Whether they’re planning to make out on the couch, Jonghyun isn’t the slightest bit interested. Jinki takes his shirt off, Taemin following suit, and Jonghyun is in a panic. He finishes his mug of coffee in one shot and heads to his room while Jinki, still locked in a fiery kiss with his boyfriend, carries said boyfriend to his room.
“Dammit!” Jonghyun curses as he throws himself face down on his bed. “I’m never going to let myself be left alone in the dorm with just those two again!” he grumbles. He irately turns his player on and plays some rock music in full volume to drown the unwanted noises coming from the other room. If only Sekyung didn’t break up with him…
“Jonghyun-ah, are you listening to me?”
Jonghyun snaps out of his thoughts and remembers that he’s in a meeting with the group and their managers. He looks up and sees Yoonduk frowning at him. “Yes, hyung. I’m listening.”
Yoonduk sighs and nods, then he lets Gyeongshik take over for him.
Jonghyun mentally slaps himself as everyone exit the meeting room, everyone but one person. He gets startled when someone gives his shoulder a squeeze. He’s surprised to find out that it’s Jinki.
“Are you alright?” the leader, also his partner in crime, worriedly asks.
It takes Jonghyun a few seconds to answer. “Yeah, I’m fine, hyung.” He doesn’t say more. Jinki sits beside him and faces him.
“You’re always spacing out recently. How is that being fine?” Jinki smiles tentatively. “Come on, Jjong-ah. What’s going on?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Jonghyun takes his leave before Jinki can question him any further.
“So… did you talk to him?” Taemin asks Jinki as they settle on the couch back in their dorm.
“I tried, but… he left,” Jinki replies, sighing, as he slouches on the couch and stares into the distance.
“It’s okay, hyung. He’ll open up too,” Taemin reassures him. The maknae then gives him a peck on the lips and brings their hands together, lacing their fingers. Jinki looks intently at Taemin and gives him a heart-warming smile.
“I love you, Taeminnie.”
“I know, hyung. I do too.” Taemin beams at the older boy, making the latter’s woes and thoughts disappear. The maknae flushes as Jinki leans in to kiss him.
The peak of Jonghyun’s depression comes months after, on the night before their departure to Nanjing. It’s that time when he feels so lonely, being far away from home since they’ve almost always been overseas these days. He wonders when he’s become so unlucky, always in the wrong place and at the wrong time, whilst he accidentally walks in on Minho and Kibum snogging in the kitchen. Minho pushes Kibum against the kitchen counter and subtly thrusts his hips against the other boy’s. Kibum moans in response. None of them seem to notice Jonghyun’s presence; Kibum roughly pulls Minho’s hair as they exchange open-mouth kisses. Still in quite a shock, Jonghyun storms out of the dorm and bumps, unfortunately, into Jinki and Taemin, the happy-go-lucky (not to mention too mushy) couple. He doesn’t bother to get on his feet when he falls.
“What’s wrong, Jonghyun-hyung?” Taemin asks, assisting Jinki in helping Jonghyun get up. Both fail anyway, and the three of them end up sitting on the floor.
“Did something happen?” Jinki pats Jonghyun’s back. “You look pale.”
Taemin can’t help but be anxious. Jonghyun has been strangely unhappy lately. “Are you feeling sick anywhere?”
Jonghyun takes a deep breath before speaking. He doesn’t want to break down in front of this happy, worriless couple. “Jinki-hyung, Taemin-ah…" He pauses for a few seconds, hesitating. "I appreciate your concern, really. I’m thankful that you’re here, that you’re by my side, waiting for me to speak my mind. But right now, I need to see Sekyung. I know she’s busy, but I need to see her somehow.”
“Why bring Sekyung into this? Hyun-ah, that’s highly unlikely of you. You’re not together anymore. And our managers won’t like it if the fans find out that you’re still seeing her even after the breakup. You know how bitchy and crazy most of them can get.” Jinki places his hand on Jonghyun’s. “Tell me. Is this about Minho?”
Jonghyun’s eyes widen at the mention of Minho’s name. And suddenly, tears are flowing freely.
“Hyung…” Taemin gets teary-eyed and pulls Jonghyun close to him, locking him in an embrace.
Jinki smiles sadly, tears welling up in his eyes, as Jonghyun bursts into silent, heartrending sobs. The leader ultimately hugs Jonghyun and Taemin, holding them tightly in his arms.
Jonghyun is unusually, overly cheerful the next day. Taemin wonders how he recovered so quickly, while Jinki isn’t the least bit surprised. He knows how Jonghyun handles his emotional problems. He doesn’t let them get to him when there’s really no reason to. Jinki chuckles at how silly Jonghyun is to even have that much strength to fool around with Kibum at the airport.
Taemin tugs at Jinki’s arm after he catches up with him.
“You didn’t wait for me.” He pouts at Jinki. The older boy merely laughs at him and ruffles the maknae’s hair.
“I was too amused, watching those two.” Jinki points to Jonghyun and Kibum attempting to make a heart sign with their arms as they go up the escalator.
Taemin grins mischievously. “That looks fun!” He then disappears from Jinki’s side. And the next thing Jinki knows, Taemin is already behind Jonghyun and Kibum, ruining their couple moment.
The mood stays pleasant even until their time for rehearsal. They’re all tired, Jinki knows. But Jonghyun stays jolly and energetic as ever that Jinki wonders where those optimistic feelings came from. They’re currently sitting on the bleachers for the Jojo rehearsal, and as usual, Minho’s being playful around Jonghyun, teasing him like he always did in their previous rehearsals and concerts.
The bleachers, divided in half, are pushed by the concert staff. As the other half gets close, Minho faces sideward and leans his upper body towards the same direction that he’s facing, his lips in a pout as he’s getting ready to tease Jonghyun with yet another kiss that never really ends up in a kiss. Jonghyun’s so near that Minho can almost hear his breathing as he sings. He stays in that pouting position, waiting for Jonghyun to close the space between them. When Jonghyun does lean towards Minho, he doesn’t hesitate for a second and gives Minho a quick peck on the lips. Flabbergasted, Minho covers his lips with his hand and looks, wide-eyed, at the other members. He misses the jealousy and hurt in Kibum’s eyes. Jonghyun, on the other hand, simply smiles blissfully as if he’s done a good job in some kind of mission. This is how he chooses to let go of his feelings for Minho. It's enough, at least for him, that he got the chance to know the feel of Minho’s lips on his own, even for a split second.
