The first 1/3 is basically dead-on to the comics, only in Afghanistan, and not Communist Vietnam, and he was aided by Yin-sen, not Jensen.

also, I heard about the stinger at the end. Good, but I'm not worried about not seeing it the first time around.

I think it was established that the terrorist where not exactly the most intelligent of people.
You know I felt the storyline being different from most movies also, as not being a avid comic book reader I can't comment on its likeness, but It did seem like it was written by someone who wouldn't ordinarily be writing screenplays.
Better than the other comic book movies IMO.
