A Gamer asking a Gaming question about a game...

Okay, so recently I've been needing a little stress relief. So in order to actually play a stress relieving game and not watch my game load forever, I installed an old game I used to play before The Sims 2 took over my life, many, many, many years ago. It was called 1503 AD. I forgot how much I love that type of game. However now I would like to ( Read more... )

Do you know of the Civilization series? You basically have to build up your own empire, using strategy and is simple in overall concept, but captivating enough to keep your attention for countless hours. This is in my opinion of course. Some people find it redundant and boring, but it honestly depends what you like. :) I have personally played it and still do from time to time.

I have heard of the Civilization series. I think I've picked it up a few times over the years and checked it out. I'll have to look closer but that sounds good!

I play Guild Wars when I'm not into Sims. Its kinda like WOW and Everquest, but there is no monthly fee. Just the cost of the game which is pretty cheap now. You can get the base game plus all 3 expansions as one package for $40 on Amazon. Its pretty easy to get into if you start with the base game cause it makes you start in a tutorial world so it makes it really easy to learn the controls and features of the game. Only downside is its online play and some stuff has to be done as a group with other players.

I'll have to look into it but I'm not really into the online playing because my internet connection isn't very reliable and they're talking about starting to charge by the bandwidth you use.

I don't know what you mean by "open ended", but I LOVE the Pharaoh (and its expansion, Cleopatra) game. It is easy enough to master, complicated enough to be interesting, and you get to play THROUGH THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT EGYPT, HECK YES. Ahem.

Open ended it how I think of Sims. Just kind of building something up without any real goals in mind. Campaigns are okay as long as it isn't a guided walkthrough of the game.

That does sound interesting though!

I've never played Settlers but would like to put in a vote for Age of Empires. Which is made of awesome :) It has campaigns and free play and I have always found it to be enjoyable for both lengthy play sessions and casual gaming where you only have a short time to spare ( ... )

I do think I remember picking up Age of Empires at one point too. I'm going to but both games on my watch list.

I'm really glad I asked about games though, because now I have a huge list of games to check out and see if they'll fit with my gaming style. Thanks for the input! The Neverwinter Nights sounds interesting too, they only part I worry about is the killing and things because I always end up dead. To say I don't have a military/fighting gaming mind would be a HUGE understatement. ^.^

I think I would be more interested in the "free" play. I don't mind a little story or anything like that or even quests, but I'm mainly into a SimCity like setup I think... except not SimCity. ^.^ I ended up buying a download of Dawn of Discovery last night by the people who make the Settlers, so I'll see how it goes today when I can actually play!

I you liked 1503 AD, I'm sure you will like Anno 1404, it's a gorgeous game. They have a campaign but you can also play a pretty much open ended game with your own goals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z3v1uGwc3c

There's also Anno 1701, so you can check the differences, I don't remember which one is a newer one.
