The closet paleontologist... brassknight86 August 29 2006, 20:53:45 UTC
paleontology was my first love... and I have to be a bastard and inform you that niether of those organisms is a dinosaur by the scientific sense...

...as an english major, I understand that the word dinosaur is used in reference to all giant reptiles of the mesazoic era, and in common speech, it is a perfectly acceptable way of indicating ancient large reptile...

...but the scientist in me, supressed as he is, must tell you that we are looking at two reptiles which BOTH lack the bird hip that is indicative of a dinosaur and enabled them to move across land in a way more similar to todays large flightless birds or even large mammals like the elephant-- all of whom have their legs located underneath their torso.
...elasmosaurs and pterosaurs, as sweetly awesome as they are, are mere contemporaries of the dinosaur. There, I've done my evil deed for the day. Mwahahahaha!

Please explain to me what giant dinosaurs (or not dinosaurs, perhaps) fighting have to do with the fossils of the first Americans. Do dinosaurs now qualify as Americans if they lived in America? (There's a question for Anstey.)

i've decided that in order to motivate myself to not skip class on fridays, i will designate it 'kevin day', in which i will ask at least one kevin-eqsue question to amuse and reward myself for showing up.

i assure you, when we get to the fossil book, this will be tops on my priority list
