it's time to say goodbye - - -
Three months after Naoto left, KAITO dared to sleep in his Master’s bed. The house was just too quiet without anyone around and it left him too aware of how much time was passing. He found himself staring at the small stack of magazines left behind, watching the clock, glancing at the calendar. He tried to turn the television on, but the programs were cut short one day and never came back on.
Four months after Naoto left, KAITO watched as the last residents in their neighborhood drove away.
Six months after Naoto left, KAITO opened up one of the Master’s magazines and started to read. There was an interesting article about traveling to different countries and learning different things. Maybe the Master was doing the same thing right now.
Eleven months after Naoto left, it was Christmas. It was the first Christmas KAITO had ever spent by himself since he was first activated.
A year after Naoto left, KAITO found himself sleeping in the Master’s bed regularly.
Two years after Naoto left, KAITO began to walk outside only to rush back home whenever he had even the slightest thought that the Master returned.
Three years after Naoto left, KAITO found a dying human. He didn’t know what to do and, scared out of his wits, ended up running away. It took him two more days before he got the nerve to visit the place again, but by then the person had died. Feeling guilty, he decided that he wouldn’t eat anything from now on and leave it all for the people who really needed it. It was the last time he would eat ice-cream.
Four years after Naoto left, KAITO found a store with all the ice-cream melted and regretted not having at least one for old time’s sake.
Five years after Naoto left, KAITO spent a little more than a month feeling depressed and crying, finally convinced that he’d been left behind for good.
Six years after Naoto left, KAITO started to sing to the people still in the city, feeling a sort of kinship with them. He couldn’t help but feel betrayed when they died and he was alone again.
Seven years after Naoto left, KAITO got used to seeing dead bodies of people. He could open doors inside random homes and feel nothing but pity when he found decomposing corpses. There was no more fear or apprehension.
Eight years after Naoto left, KAITO stopped finding anyone alive and only found dead.
Nine years after Naoto left, KAITO started to think that maybe Naoto died the same way. He cried again on what would be his Master’s birthday.
Ten years after Naoto left, after tiring himself out over the thought of his Master’s death, KAITO went out of the home to explore the city again.
He never came back.
