[prologue] drabbles

I've just been in a drabble-y mood lately, I guess.

- - - let's play a song known to no-one - - -

Years ago, when KAITO was still living in his Master’s home and within the city, he found the zoo. Going inside, he found that the animals were either dead or dying and the predator cages were forced open. After finding the tiger cage with the door ajar and the rusty lock broken, he turned around to run face-to-face into some sort of deer with large antlers. He shrieked, the deer shrieked, and they both nearly knocked each other over in an attempt to get away.

This would be the first of many times that he would run into the same species. It took thirty years to convince him that it wasn’t the same damn deer, because he didn’t think they lived for that long.

His first experience with acid rain was fairly uneventful for him. He didn’t even realize it was a different kind of rain until he saw a survivor flinching away from the raindrops and desperately trying to hide under something, anything. When the rain paused he saw the dry, stinging condition it left her skin in. When it started up again, KAITO covered her with his coat and spent the night with her under a sheltered area. They talked about the days past and themselves. She liked pizza. He liked ice-cream. He sang a song and she smiled.

She passed away a week later. He buried her in a place that the rain couldn’t get to.

Animals tended to either ignore him or stare at him strangely. It was probably because he didn’t move like they did or looked out of place with his blue patterns. He probably didn’t smell or sound like anything natural, either. It was a little sad to be reminded of how unnatural he was, but it was just something else he had to get used to.

One day, while washing his scarf in some running water, he realized he was being watched by a large tiger. There was a moment of “is it going to eat me, is it going to eat me?” on his half and “can I eat it, can I eat it?” on the tiger’s, but in the end they just stood there staring at each other. Eventually, it got to the point where KAITO felt incredibly self-conscious and, a little annoyed, started to shoo it away. The beast did leave, but not without throwing another curious glance his way.

KAITO finished up his chore, only pausing once when he realized he was grumbling aloud about being stared by a tiger.

He didn't take anything with him when he left the home for the last time. No pictures, magazines, food, or clothing. Leaving was impulsive and somewhat of a desperate attempt to escape that lonely, trapped feeling he felt in their home. At least, out here, he could see and hear other creatures moving around. At least, out here, he could find the dead or dying and remember that they were still out there.

Somewhere. He wanted to find them. Even if he had to leave the city.

One day, while he was sleeping outside, he realized there were birds tugging on his hair in an attempt to get material for nest-building. It was cute at first, until a mental image of him with thinning hair brought it crashing to the ground.

He ended up batting them away, opting for years with a full head of hair and silently apologizing for his vanity.

Part of him thought he could hear his Master laughing at him.
