Zoe is grateful to go on a different kind of mission too. They have so much to do for these two cases that they have open, but they are exhausting. They carry baggage and pain along with them because of the seriousness of it. It is nice to have this break to do a mission that is not so weighted down but is still important.

Plus, they get to dress up. She can take off the skirt for the dress and travel through the vents to provide back up for him if necessary and search the deeper rooms once everyone else seems preoccupied.

John is supposed to get some information from the wife. Zoe is supposed to look around for information that might be lying around. She glances in the mirror, fixes her hair, and looks to him with a small smile at the snobby sneer before she lifts her chin at him all snobbily.

"I'm always ready, Mr. John."

Zoe leans over to kiss his cheek before she turns and steps out of the car.

"Ah, now that's perfect," he says with a small smirk. They're all gifted actors and actresses, in their own way. They have to be to run a scam successfully. It's a contradiction, since they're so honest with each other, but that's irony for you.

John finishes driving the last block and further into the iron-wrought gates guarding the monstrosity of the house. He steps out of the car as well, tossing the keys at the valet. It's a nonchalant, imposing sort of gesture in its carelessness. Like he's important and everyone should know it.

He expects people to do his bidding and he expects them to do it now. And he's come to learn that if you act that way and truly believe it, people will believe it, too.

He places an arm around Zoe's waist and looks up at the ostentatious mansion. "I really hope they have something other than caviar in their menu."

They have to be gifted actors and actresses. Zoe had to learn how to act as she is always someone that has her emotions splayed on her face, doesn't know how to hide them, and it's what she struggles with most on missions. She is gifted at fighting (her electricity gives her a hands up there), decent with technology, good at sneaking around without being caught, but it was the acting and conning that she had to work at. That she still has to work at even after all this time ( ... )

John presses his finger against the door bell, which is more of a light ding and he shakes his head ruefully. "It's tough to say, Diane," he says, and she doesn't look like a Diane to him--doesn't look like anything but Zoe to him--but that's part of selling the act. "My stomach is as unpredictable as my uppity mood swings."

There are no uppity mood swings. I can't imagine living in a place like this.

"Thank God for that," he says, eyes scanning the length of the premises. It'd be tough to carry out a job on such expansive, well-guarded grounds but that's why they're so damn good at what they do.

The slight grimace turns into a full-blown, charming grin once the door is opened. The foyer at the entrace is even more ostentatious than what was out back. The butler greets them and sweeps his hand in a gesture for them to come on in. "Here goes nothing," he whispers into her ear before he steps inside with Zoe tucked in close beside him.

Zoe is not surprised when John drives away from the Crowbar, when he doesn't go inside and isn't in his room when she eventually makes her way to his room to talk to him. There's this emptiness in her chest at the sight of that empty room, not knowing where he is. She hates that feeling.

There's a fear deep in her heart that he won't come back, that the last things she has ever said to him. One would think that after all he had been through that nothing could tear him away from them again but she knows better. He told her once himself that if he ever talked about it he wouldn't be able to stay. There are really no guarantees.

Even when one plans on returning, there are too many objects, too many events that can get in the way. There are fires, kidnapping. There's death. Aren't they well acquainted with that? One day you talk to someone, the next day, they're dead. It happens that fast. He could get in a car accident. Someone could shoot him ( ... )

John drives around aimlessly for well over two hours, though at some point he stops directly in front of the warehouse that used to belong to the Saints. He says used to, because it doesn't anymore. Oleg was killed and there was a hostile takeover. It's what forced Viktor to come to town and take back what belonged to his older brother once, but not that warehouse in which he was killed.

Just as John thought it'd be another cosmic joke where everyone got the punchline except him. He doesn't even know why Oleg decided to return to Chicago that day, except he did, and John didn't think he'd have the time to see Sonny or any of their family members.

He'd sit down at the meeting, order John around like the fucking dog he was, and they'd be gone before anyone ever found out they were there.

That's not what happened, and John isn't aware of how different everything would be if there'd been one alteration to any event that would lead to Oleg still being alive ( ... )

Zoe would not want him feeling guilt for hangups that she has from something that he had no control over, his year away and the fire that happened before that. Of course, he can get a breath of fresh air when he needs it, and she understands that he did need it ( ... )

"I'm--" they both begin to say at the same time, but he stops and she doesn't.

I'm sorry.

John lets out a small laugh that isn't at all amused. He cups the back of his head as she begins to speak and oddly enough, the apology doesn't make him feel better. It makes him feel worse. He doesn't want her looking like that or apologizing for having emotions she cannot control, especially when those emotions come from a part of her that he loves so much and--and he knows that it's because she loves him.

She loves him and has loved him through everything he ever put her through, when he wasn't sure what he felt for her or what he wanted, she remained unwavering. But he also knows it's important for her to say these things so he lets her say them, hopes they help more than beating the pulp out of that woman would have ( ... )
