Whenever I see an Al Pacino movie, I'm usually being dragged reluctantly to the theater. For whatever reason, I always expect to be annoyed by his performance, expecting it to be embarrassingly over-the-top, but most of the time, I'm pleasantly surprised. The most recent example of this was The Merchant of Venice, which I did not expect to like, but did.
I blame Scent of a Woman. I hated, hated, hated that film, and I found Pacino's performance like fingernails on a chalkboard. Why this stuck in my mind, permanently warping my view of Pacino, is a mystery. It wasn't the first Pacino film I'd seen, and plenty of actors I like have turned in lousy performances (e.g. Robert Redford's phoned-in portrayal in Out of Africa). And I haven't even seen some of the Pacino films nearly everyone hated, like Simone. I've seen plenty of Pacino films I liked, including two of the three Godfather films (and I didn't hate The Godfather III as much as most people did, though I still didn't care for it).
