Sam and Oliver after the UC

They’re all in the squad car before Oliver can think again; muscle memory and instinct slowly relaxing their control over his actions. Too close. Sam slumps down in the backseat, exhausted and breathing shallowly. The medics have briefly checked him over, but both Noelle and Oliver know that Sam lies like a dog when he doesn’t want any medical attention. Noelle’s riding shotgun, face turned to watch Sam with a critical eye, in case they need to make a hospital detour.

He doesn’t bother to hide his sigh of relief. The lingering adrenaline rush leaves his pulse racing uncomfortably; a small price to pay for finding Sam alive. More-or-less unharmed.

The drive is silent for a few minutes until he finally calms down enough to breathe normally, fingers still white-knuckled on the wheel.

“You okay back there brother?”  Yeah okay, Oliver still wants a little reassurance that Sam’s fine. He’s not too ashamed to admit it.

“Yep,” Sam says.

Oliver had expected -a few more words in that reply. Maybe not a stupid joke, because even Sammy knows where to draw the line on bad puns and now is not the time. But something.

“No broken bones then Swarek?” Noelle sounds skeptical, like given his current mood, she can’t decide whether it was even worth the breath to ask.

“Nope.”

Sam’s laconic, one worded responses are beginning to piss Oliver off. What the hell Swarek?

“Then what the hell were you thinking? How long have you been a copper Sammy?”

Oliver might be raising his voice a bit, but he’s not yelling. Years and years of marriage life have taught him that yelling solves nothing, even if it makes you feel better. Besides, he knows plenty of people willing to yell at Sam, starting with Frank and working all the way down to Sam’s sister.

“A long damn time.” Sam’s voice is calm, resigned, like he’s made his mind up about something.

“That’s right. A long damn time. And what you did was stupid.”

Noelle butts in, adds her two cents to what feels like a one-sided conversation. “Seriously Swarek. Good job growing a pair with McNally...but really, really not the right time.”

Sam is silent. Oliver figures that he’s probably already had time to think this through, stuck in that place with only Jamie Brennan’s fists to keep him company.

“Come on Sammy. You’re smart. She’s smart. This isn’t going to go down well for either of you.”

For the record, this is not what Oliver had meant when he’d told Sam to get his act together. Trust Sam to be stupid in the worst possible way, for the best possible reason. But really, Sam’s been stupid over McNally for a long time.

“Best case is suspension,” Sam agrees. He doesn’t sound very optimistic.

“I won’t ask if she’s worth it.” Because it’s McNally, so of course she is.

“She is,” says Sam, voice firm.

Oliver sighs. “I know brother. Never doubted that. Not for a second.”

The rest of the ride is quiet.
