Canon: The World Ends With You
Character: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryuu
Timeline: Post-game
Personality: On the outside, Joshua is an incredibly enigmatic individual. He's evasive, overtly flamboyant and prissy, incredibly arrogant and a seeming know-it-all. Right from day one, he's already irritating Neku to no end with his teasing, avoidance of topics and pretentious nature, as well as his surprising amount of knowledge of the Game. By no means is his intelligence unwarranted, but for how much he knows, it does mark him as suspicious. After all, Players are usually oblivious as to the workings of the Game when they first begin to play.
It's very difficult at any given time to tell exactly what he's thinking, or even to determine if he's telling the full truth. His typical reaction to questions is to either dodge it entirely, or give bits and pieces of the answer, making it to where the person asking the question has to figure out the answer for themselves. Joshua is more than willing to make people work for their answers, rather than give it to them straight. Even so, he does tend to give quite a bit of advice and several positive thoughts, frequently telling Neku to expand his horizons and open up. Despite this, he rarely follows any of his own advice, keeping his own thoughts to himself and largely commenting on everything else instead.
Although outwardly friendly and willing to talk to any type of person, Joshua is a very self-centered, antisocial individual, preferring to do things his own way. Manipulative is his middle name. He knows what he wants to accomplish, and he knows exactly what to do or say to get it done. His true intentions are kept strictly to himself. This is partly due to the fact that in reality, he is the Game's Composer, and cannot let his identity be known.
Being the Composer means that he is the head of the Reaper's Game. It also means that he is the figurative God of Shibuya, where his word is law. He can create and destroy what he wishes, as he wishes it. The fact that he was willing to destroy all of Shibuya simply because he couldn't see any potential for change in it is scary enough. He has that little faith in people in general - which makes him surprisingly like Neku at the beginning of the game. It's this quality that helps them to bond and somewhat befriend each other. Fortunately for Shibuya, Neku had other partners to help him open up, and this change in Neku spawned an optimistic turn in Joshua regarding Shibuya, causing him to decide to give it a chance. Shibuya was also directly impacted - positively - by this change in Joshua, according to Mr. Hanekoma, showing just how connected Joshua is to the city.
On the inside, however, Joshua is simply incredibly lonely. Mr. Hanekoma says it himself, in that Joshua has been alone most of his life and never had very many friends at all. It makes sense, considering that the Composer stays hidden, only speaking to the Conductor or the Producer, and also in the fact that his position alone makes others either fear his power or want to kill him to obtain it themselves. Mr. Hanekoma even points out Joshua's loneliness to him at the end of the game, where they are seen on the top of Shibuya's 104 building, looking down on Neku and friends as they reunite. Joshua almost seems like he refuses to acknowledge this, as he leaves without a word, interrupting Mr. Hanekoma's sentence.
Background: It all begins with a boy.
Or, rather, it all begins with a bet. That's a better place to start.
Joshua, the Composer of Shibuya, had been growing bored with his city. He couldn't find any potential for growth or change in it, as the people were too dull and clouded to realize it, and was prepared to erase it entirely before the other grounds were contaminated with Shibuya's chaotic state. His Conductor, Megumi Kitaniji, thought differently - he could see the potential, and was prepared to fight to keep Shibuya from being erased. So, he proposed that Joshua give him a chance to prove him wrong. In turn, Joshua proposed a simple game, by using the Reaper's Game - if Megumi could fix Shibuya within a month, he would let Shibuya remain. If he couldn't, though, both Megumi and Shibuya would be erased.
In order to handicap himself and give Megumi a chance of winning, Joshua vowed to retreat to the RG - the "Realground" - and not to challenge him directly. He also chose to pick a Player to represent himself.
And now, now, it begins with a boy.
Having retreated to the RG, it was Joshua's opportunity to choose someone to serve as his Player by proxy. He happened to choose Neku, an antisocial boy with no faith in other people, much like himself. A great challenge for Megumi, in other words. But just before he could kill Neku, Sho Minamimoto, a Reaper from the UG - "Underground" - appeared. He had followed Joshua into the RG in a false hope that he would be easier to kill in the RG than in the UG. Minamimoto wanted to usurp the position of Composer from him. Unfortunately for him, Joshua still had access to his Composer abilities even in the RG, and managed to stop Minamimoto's bullets before they could strike him. In turn, he shot Minamimoto, causing him to retreat to the UG to recover. Unfortunately, he now knew what Joshua looked like, which could prove an irritating hitch in Joshua's plans further down the road.
With Neku standing there, shocked at seeing the entire thing, Joshua went ahead and pulled the trigger, killing his proxy and sending him into the Game.
During Neku's first week in the Game, Joshua kept a close watch on him, noting his progress and even noticing how his partner, Shiki, was slowly getting Neku to open up. It was already a change, and it didn't bode well for Joshua's side of the bet. It came as no surprise when Neku and Shiki defeated the week's Game Master with ease. But rather than return the both of them to life, like they had come to believe, Joshua gave the direct order to only return Shiki, forcing Neku to play a second week. But Joshua had plans in store for this time...
The second week began, and Neku immediately made for the statue of Hachiko, having been told by Shiki that it was a popular meeting place. Upon arriving, Joshua randomly formed a Pact with him without even asking first. Much to Neku's chagrin, Joshua proved to be helpful with his knowledge of the game, but at the same time very, very annoying. Not to mention the fact that scanning Joshua seemed to produce strange fragments of memories, ones that he didn't remember having. Ones that involved Joshua killing him.
Minamimoto, who had been assigned the Game Master for the week, began slacking off around the second day, not sending out daily missions for the Players. Joshua snagged this as an opportunity to get things rolling against Megumi. Neku was unwillingly dragged off to various places in Shibuya, and after getting extremely annoyed, he finally managed to wring from his partner that they were searching for the Shibuya River so that Josh could 'jack' the game from the Composer. In reality, Joshua was just attempting to aim Neku towards Megumi, so that he could win the bet himself.
They managed to finally locate the River, but found the entrance sealed off. Some taboo Noise attacked the two, and in order to save the both of them, Joshua used an attack that revealed him to be a living Player. This angered Neku, and he claimed that Josh was only 'playing the Game for kicks'. Josh replied that Neku still gets something from playing the Game, and Neku finally accused his partner of killing him. True to fashion, Joshua remained fairly sketchy on this, stating "What if I am the one who killed you? You're going to do something about it?" The next day, Neku decided to just get on with the mission that came, but claimed that he still hadn't forgiven Josh.
Their last day, a mission came to erase the Game Master at Pork City. The pair arrived at the building, working their way up to the top and finally getting to the Game Master, Minamimoto. Something was triggered in Neku's mind, and suddenly he "remembered" exactly what had happened the day he died; Joshua and Minamimoto had been the ones in the gunfight at Udagawa, and Minamimoto had been the one that shot Neku. Before he had much time to think, Minamimoto attacked. The partners put up a good fight, and managed to hold up fairly well against the Game Master. Without warning, Minamimoto used a very powerful Flare psych. Josh pushed Neku out of the way, claiming that "[he] thought [Neku] couldn't afford to lose", and took the full brunt of the shot. Although it appeared like Joshua had been annihilated by the blow, he'd really been able to deflect it, knocking out and disabling Minamimoto while at the same time being knocked into a parallel dimension himself. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to bring himself back to his own dimension, and he had to wait for Sanae Hanekoma, his Producer, to come retrieve him.
And he wasn't brought back a moment too soon. The moment he came back, Joshua caught Minamimoto trying to break into the Dead God's Pad - the Reapers' headquarters - to challenge him. Of course, this came as a failure, as Joshua quickly squashed his hopes - literally. Neku and company found Minamimoto's body broken and beneath a vending machine on their own way through to the Dead God's Pad. Joshua watched on from a distance as Megumi used Shiki, who had mysteriously reappeared in the UG, against Neku and Beat. The two made short work of Megumi, though.
As soon as Megumi was defeated, Joshua appeared, much to Neku's surprise. He and Megumi held a brief conversation regarding their bet, and how his timer must be close to running out. Megumi, in a last ditch effort to win the bet, grabs up Neku's three partners - Joshua included - and attempts to use them to attack Neku one last time. With their help, however, Neku manages to defeat Megumi once and for all.
After Megumi's defeat, Joshua finally reveals that he is actually the Composer, and he had been playing a game with Megumi for the fate of Shibuya's existence. And, worst of all, Neku had been playing for Joshua, essentially helping in the destruction of Shibuya. Joshua took a moment to fully restore Neku's memories, and Neku finally realized that it had been Joshua that had killed him, not Minamimoto.
As a final attempt, Joshua challenged Neku to one last game - a duel. The winner would be the Composer and would get to choose to do what he wished with Shibuya. Without much choice, Neku accepted. The two of them faced off, each holding a gun, with Neku extremely hesitant. Joshua began the countdown, counting from ten to zero. At zero, a gun fired, though it is not shown which gun.
A week later, Neku, Shiki, Beat and Rhyme are all shown to be living their normal lives, and Joshua is still shown to be the Composer, leading to believe that he had been the one to fire the gun and that Neku had lost their duel. However, it also means that his faith in Shibuya had been restored, and his original plan to erase Shibuya had been discarded.
In the final scene, Mr. Hanekoma and Joshua in Composer form are seen looking down at the four as they reunite. Mr. Hanekoma comments on how everything that had happened would have serious repercussions "upstairs", but at least everything was back to normal. Upon commenting on how lonely Joshua looked while watching them, Joshua took off mid-sentence.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Physically, Joshua is weak. He's slender, has little to no muscle mass. He doesn't appear to show any sort of prowess with hand-to-hand fighting, but he's been able to fire a handgun with a striking amount of accuracy. He refuses to run or jump, because he doesn't like to sweat and doesn't want to get his clothes dirty. An athlete, Joshua is not.
During battle, Joshua's means of attack comes in the form of a couple of pins, which allow him to utilize his cell phone as a weapon. The first pin, Falling from the Heavens, allows him to summon all manner of things from the sky to fall onto enemies - vending machines, cars, street signs, quite literally anything. The second pin, Fallen Angel, allows him to summon beams of light in the form of angels holding spears that strike the enemy from above.
As Composer, Joshua is also able to alter his frequency a little to travel between dimensions - from the UG to the RG, for example. Due to the nature of Adstringendum, this dimensional travel would not be possible. This same frequency alteration does allow him to float above the ground, though, and only requires a minute amount of frequency shift. At most, the affect in Adstringendum's combined spiritual levels would be rapid exhaustion, if he attempts it.
In Shibuya, Joshua has a slight level of precognition, as well as the ability to create invisible shields and barriers. The precognition would not work here, but the shields and barriers will still be of use.
Sample Journal Post:
[The feed comes on as audio, first. It's actually silent for a good couple of minutes, save for the occasional sound of crunching gravel and dirt beneath the soles of shoes. Once, there's a sound like a door being pushed open, one that's in dire need of a good oiling.
A moment more of the crunching beneath rubber, and then, a rather androgynous-sounding giggle.]
My, someone certainly threw a fit.
[A few more beats of silence, and the video function finally flips on to show a feminine face, shaggy silver hair falling haphazardly around it. Even with the voice, it's hard to tell, but as the face pulls away a little, there is very clearly no bust whatsoever on this chest. The partially unbuttoned shirt attests to that. The face is smiling, though, far from upset about the situation.]
This little kidnapping stunt is certainly in poor taste. I'm needed elsewhere, so if someone could kindly tell me where I am and why?
Sample RP:
Joshua had been knocked into other dimensions before. This certainly wasn't the first time. But it was the first time he'd ever seen anything like this.
His first reaction was that this was the result of a Composer that wasn't taking good care of their city. He couldn't hear the Music, so it definitely wasn't Shibuya, which made him frown. Before, he'd just been thrown into an alternate Shibuya. Now, he seems to have been delocated somewhere else entirely. The fact that his strong attachment to the city had been dulled down to a sliver of what it should be worried him beyond belief. He'd never been unattached from Shibuya in the entire time he'd been Composer. Not even in the alternate Shibuya.
Frustrated, Joshua turned his eyes down to the device in his hand. It wasn't his own cell phone - that was securely in his pocket - but if it had been by him upon his arrival here, it had to be important. That's the way pins worked in the Game - everyone woke up with at least one. A pity it didn't seem to have the same add-ons that Sanae had attached to his phone. All he could do was wait for someone to answer his call, and gather information. But if he couldn't contact Sanae... well, he'd effectively be stuck.
For once in his life, Joshua wasn't certain what to do.
