He didn´t know what to do.

It was rare. Mello always acted, no matter if he knew where it would get him or not. But this. This.

He knew he wanted to kill. No matter how much he despised Econtra, he wanted to kill those things, for even daring to intrude and take his life once again. It was insulting.

But he still was calm. Because he also knew he wasn´t a demon, he wasn´t magic, he was a single boy with a gun full of blanks and no allies. If he´d only ... if he´d only find Kairi, or Watanuki, or the other Mello, anyone, Near -

And then, he saw him. And even if he wasn´t aware of the cause, he felt his calmness crash and burn when he spotted him wandering through the corridors like that, alone, unprotected.

How stupid.

Not bothering to call out for him, Mello ran directly towards him, grabbing his pale wrist.

"The fuck you think you´re doing?!" He hissed. "Why aren´t you hiding already? You´re supposed to be good at that!"

Mello.

The sight of the boy was enough to send Near an irrational feeling of safety, as if everything would be all right under Mello's protection. It was obvious, however, that the older boy was as human as he was (no... Mello was more human than he was), and therefore as prone to die.

"I was following Miss Watanuki." In the middle of the chaos, he'd lost her. "Are you heading to the arena? I can't return on my own."

That would be enough to take Mello away from the dangerous zone.

Staring at him, a certain thought crossed Mello´s mind.

Right now, we´re equal.

He could see it reflected in Near´s face, even though it didn´t reveal much, as usual - the boy was scared. And so was Mello. At this point, they weren´t arrogant little genius boys anymore ... they were mortal, they were human, they didn´t want to die. Not here. Not now.

"I am," He said. He hadn´t really intended to flee from battle, but bringing Near to the arena seemed to be a really important task now.

What was he worth if he didn´t even manage to protect him...?

Mello cocked his gun. It was completely useless, it was filled with rubber bullets, but he hoped that seeing him armed would give Near another notion of being safe, even if it was an illusion.

"Come with me," He wanted to take Near´s hand, but then, that seemed to be too much ... Mello thought back to the dream simulation.

Once again, they were escaping. Together. He felt as if they could make it.

A nod answered Mello's command. Near followed him closely, behind him through the corridors and sound of explosions, like two orphans surviving a nightmare together. There was no one in sight, but they could hear people screaming and fighting; some of them injured, some of them dead. Near just focused on Mello's back, doing his best to follow his pace until the both of them would be out of that battlefield. That was how he had planned everything-- both M and N would be heralded victorious when Kira fell ( ... )
