I do not see the point in getting blindly drunk, for it only leads to trouble, and then regret. I know this at a very personal level. Many centuries ago, I got blindly drunk in a tavern in a small town in my father’s kingdom. This town was inhabited by humans and the occasional elf-kind wandered through. The outcome might have been the same had you been sober, depending on the number of men approaching you. Self defense is self defense, and if taking a life is what renders your attacker harmless, then so be it. Guilt is relative.

I do not mind taking a life if it comes to orcs, uruk-hai, or other foul creatures, for these are unnatural and do not belong on Arda. But taking a man's life because he did not stop when I said no, is not acceptable. If I had been sobber, I would have thought of another way of making him harmless without taking his life.

I guess it's different for women, or someone of my temperment. If an attacker won't take the hint, I do what it takes to make it stop. *sighs* I dunno, maybe I'm too belligerent.

The difference is not a matter of sex, but a matter of station. I am a prince, and I killed someone that was under the protection of my father. This little incident caused many years worth of hostility in that town. It would have gone unnoticed if I had been just another elf, and not a Prince of Mirkwood. But it was many centuries ago and no one there remembers it anymore.
