As a nice break from my major steampunk creation, I'm working on the handkerchief camisole pictured in the Girls' Own Paper (http://frazzledfrau.tripod.com/titanic/trousseau.htm). For the most part, it looks like a fairly simple project.

I must admit, I'm impressed. I'm such a novice at sewing. Did you take classes or did you just figure it out as you went along?

I think the sewing gene skips generations in my family. Both of my grandmothers were excellent seamstresses (they used to make my Mardi Gras & Halloween costumes when I was little), but Mom took a basic sewing course three times before the instructor finally suggested she quit.

I did take home ec in middle school, too, but anything beyond basic straight seams I either learned from Grandma or taught myself from books & online tutorials.

Heehee, first time I've seen someone use that :) I'm shifting the pages to my domain name soon.. I hope.

My books are still in the sewing room so I'll see if I can move them and find the pages and get transcribing on the actual making :)

As the inept seamstress mother, I appreciate your diplomacy in describing my needlework. Your Dad apparently inherited the sewing gene from your Grandmother as he sews far straighter seams than I. In fact, during that long series of sewing classes, he was the one who patiently (for Dad) ripped out my crooked stitches and showed me how to do them straight. Not that I actually could! I noticed that you did not mention that the garment I was learning to sew was a baby dress for you (it's still unfinished). Also once Grandma flipped over a button I had just sewn and said it looked like a bloody spiderweb. All this adds up to my never touching a sewing needle again! I'll stick to the kitchen!
