Part One

Kate and Kurt fell into a routine.  Kate normally worked, but since the accident, she was on a leave of absence, so she was around during the day.  She would spend part of the day in her mom’s room and also spent time with Burt Hummel while Kurt was at school.  After school, Kurt would drive through Starbucks and pick up two venti coffees (one soy vanilla latte for him, one soy caramel macchiato for her) and head to the hospital.  He’d give her the coffee and they’d spend time with their respective parents for about an hour.  Then, they’d head downstairs (or sometimes even outside the hospital) and get a bite of dinner.  Afterwards, Kate would go home for the night and Kurt did his homework, or read, or just sat and talked with his dad, occasionally checking on Kate’s mom (whose name, he had leaned was Bethany).

When visiting hours ended at ten, he would check on Bethany one last time, give his father a kiss goodnight and headed for home.  Kate and Kurt had exchanged cell phone numbers and sometimes, when he’d leave for the night he’d call her with an update.  Sometimes they’d get together (if one of them had a particularly hard day) and sometimes they didn’t see each other until the next afternoon.

Which was why, on the eighth day of his dad being in I.C.U. and the sixth day of the “routine”, when Kate wasn’t there to get her coffee, Kurt got worried.  He peaked into 30
30Bethany’s room, relieved to see that she was there and was exactly the same (which normally wasn’t cause for celebration, but at least she wasn’t doing worse).  Then he doubled checked his dad’s room, but Kate was no where to be found.  Finally, he went over to the nurses’ station.  The day nurse on duty, Ellen, was very kind and very fond of both Kate and Kurt.

“Hey Ellen, do you know where Kate is?” he asked.

“Oh, Kurt!  I didn’t see you come in.  Yeah, she said to tell you when you got in that she’s in the chapel and she’ll meet up with you for dinner.

The chapel?  Kate wasn’t religious, she had told him so.  Maybe she had been lying, just to get him to talk to her.  Maybe there had been a plan all along to get Kurt to pray…no, that was absurd.  There was something wrong and she was hiding in the one place she felt Kurt probably wouldn’t come looking for her.  That actually hurt Kurt and he turned back to Ellen.  “I’ll be right back, I’m going to run and check on her.”

Ellen gave him a sad smile.  “I’d leave her alone, honey, she’s had kind of a rough day.”

“I’ll be right back.” he repeated.  Kurt left the ICU and headed to the elevator.  Lima General was not that big and he quickly found where the chapel was and headed there.  He opened the doors quietly and realized that Kate was the only person in there…and she was sobbing her heart out.  He approached her quietly and sat down next to her, placing on hand on his knee.  “Hey, H.B.S.”  The nickname (meaning “honorary big sister) had come about sometime on their second day of knowing each other.

“Hey, H.L.B.” (Honorary Little Brother)  She sniffed and wiped at her eyes.  “How’s your dad?”

“They say he’s improving, but he’s not awake, so I don’t really know.” He answered.  “What happened, Kate?” He asked, softly.  She turned and flung herself onto him.  She buried her face in his neck and sobbed.  Slowly, he put his arms around her, rubbing her back and shushing her gently.  Finally, her sobs began to taper off and she pulled back.

“Sorry.” She hiccupped.  Kurt shook his head, she didn’t need to apologize to him, not for this.  He had done it, too.  “It’s been a rough day.” She said, eyes filling with tears again.  He just waited patiently for her to continue.  “My job called and said that they can’t hold me on a leave of absence anymore.  I either need to come back to work or quit.  The bank called, apparently we’re way behind on our mortgage.  A social worker informed me that my mom doesn’t actually HAVE medical insurance and nothing has been covered.  And…” her voice cracked.  Oh geez, ‘and’? Kurt thought.  “The doctors came in today and said that nothing is improving and they don’t think my mom will wake up.  They wanted to discuss putting her in a long term facility.” She choked out a sob.  “What did I ever do to deserve all this?  Do you…do you think this is because I’m gay?” She asked.  “Am I being punished?”

Kurt blanched.  “No!  That’s ridiculous!!  You…we…are not being punished for anything!”

“Kurt, I don’t know what to do.  My job…I don’t make that much money.  I was in school, trying to finish up a degree, but I dropped out when my mom got hurt.  How am I supposed to pay for all of this?  Especially without any insurance.  I’m just…so lost.  I want my mom!” She cried.

Kurt didn’t know what to tell her.  Money had never been an issue for him.  His dad’s garage was the only garage in Lima and it did great business.  And his mom had been wealthy, very wealthy.  Kurt had two trust funds, one that he had access to now and one that he could get when he turned 25.  “Kate.” He said, making her look up.  “It’ll be okay.  We’ll figure it out.” he promised.

She suddenly looked horrified.  “Oh, I am SO sorry, I didn’t mean to dump all this on you.  You’ve got enough to worry about.”

He smiled then, widely.  “Isn’t that what a brother is for?  Someone you can lean on?”  She gave him a watery smile in return.

“You’re right.  Come on, H.L.B., let’s go back upstairs.”  They stood up and began to leave, but Kate caught his hand.  “Kurt, thank you.” She said sincerely.  He hugged her tightly.

“Anything for my H.B.S.” As they turned to leave, Kurt saw Mercedes standing there, looking confused.

“H.B.S.?” she asked.
